Sounds like you'll probably be figuring out what your best or safest bet is or your own comfort zone for what they'll do.
Then it's just a matter of what that promise is if they make a 'free' offer or what you value as piece of mind if spending that $900.

Don't think of it as "who wins" on the negotiation or getting it free means you win, ... think about your strategy in the longer term. I've always liked a warranty backing up my car for some period of time but if you decide to turn the car over soon or right away selling it, that warranty may not be worth it. Most warranty cost is more coverage than just the motor but those sell for $2000 and $3000 for 2 or 3 years coverage. I'd try for the new motor and 3 years motor coverage for that $900 if I wasn't selling it right away. That's $300 a year.
