How do the stock mufflers sound

2473 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  lead_foot
I first test drove a 6MT, and then a 350Z. The 350Z sounded good to me under normal acceleration, although both cars were too quiet at idle. The 6MT seems too quiet overall. I'm coming from an 6 speed Z28, and nothing sounds better than a small block Chevy. But I'm looking forward to the more refined character of the 6MT, but it's just too quiet, like stock 6 cylinder Hondas and BMWs. I'd be very happy with the sound of a Porsche of course, but no coffee can sounds please. Any recommendations on just replacing the mufflers?

I've never understood the concept of louder is better. I have always driven Japanese cars, and like the idea of stealth. I know its a matter of preference, but I just don't get the Harley mentality. Why would I want my smooth ride to deafen me? Don't get me wrong, when you rev it up it should definitely make an impact, but a more refined hum I believe is better than an extra loud gurgle (like most modified Honda's you can hear from a mile away). Is it an attention thing, like getting a yellow car? I like calling these "LOOK AT ME" cars. Any other thoughts on this?

well said lead_foot. I completely agree. I have never been a fan of the louder=better syndrome. Personally I like having a deadly car that is quiet enough to not disturb the ride or music or conversation or draw police attention, yet when you really tramp on it you know something is happening.

Patiently -- or not so patiently waiting to trade in my 1996 I30 for a wonderful G35 SC!
My Vette is loud with its Borla Stingers, but the G is stealthly quiet.

Well, louder is only better when the sounds are good. I've read that the G35 exhaust note is not particularly pleasing or sporty - that it sometimes makes truck like sounds, and that there is occasionally some harsh vibration. What do folks think of the exhuast note? The ealier comments here seem a bit guarded.
Do a search. There's a video linked up on here somewhere in a thread about the exhaust in which it can be clearly heard from both outside and in.

This is something that has been sorta botherring me, especially after I got a police warning for loud music. I enjoy listening to music, and I have to admit, the thunderous bass of some cars are annoying. My curiousity is this.
I want to know why It's illegal to play loud music in a vehicle but I can blare down the street on an abnoxious Harley and wake up the neighbours and the entire street block and it be okay with the law. I just done get it? If noise is an ssue, would a person rather hear a familiar song, or a BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...

Just a thought[cheers]

You have take into consideration that we all have
different tastes on what constitutes driving pleasure
to us. My cousing has a Jetta 1.8T quiet as can be but
at WOT makes a really sweet swoosh sound coming from the
turbo. I came up from a couple of stangs both with flow-
master mufflers and other assortment of mods, man I really
loved that muscle car sound, but thats my preference.
Others obviously dont like it and thats cool. It all comes
down to your own personal taste and you know better than
anyone what makes your ears and eyes happy. For what its
worth there is no sweeter sound than a Ferrari 360 Modena
with Tubi exhaust at WOT.[cheers]
