Default need gun buying advice please!

I got my pistol permit this weekend and now I have to submit the paperwork to my town to get my concealed-carry permit. It is about a 2 month waiting period so i figured i would start with the research now.
I am figured there were a bunch of you on here that have guns so you could point me in the right direction.

I am looking for an automatic. It is something that i am going to carry sometimes so I don't want a Desert Eagle or anything too big. I want something with some stopping power though. I want it to be pretty easy to break down and clean and also something that is reliable and doesn't need maint all the time.
I want to be able to take it to the range a pump some rounds through it without costing me an arm and a leg...
I figured i would buy one that was used for my first purchase.
Any ideas? Websites I should be looking at? Things i should be looking for? Things i should stay away from?

do you have any shooting ranges around you? there are a few here that rent and sell guns so you can pick a gun, rent it for like $5.00 and shoot it there... then you should have a good idea of what you do and don't like. also, they should be able to steer you in the right direction better than ppl here... phelan will be on soon and tell you to buy an AK-47...

yea there are a few ranges here but i don't know if I can rent guns there. The gun stores around here are ok but i want opinions from people who are not trying to sell me a gun like Gard, GZ, Phelen, and Gamma

40 S&W is the next common step up from 9mm. From there it's a 45.

I think the 40 S&W is what the LEO weapons are around here, Glock IIRC.

I bought a 9mm just for the fact I can shoot it for about half the price of a 45, the 40 S&W is somewhere about in the middle of the two. Still trying to get a 45 though....

If you are wanting one strictly for concealed carry, I say go with a small 38 revolver. It only has 5 shots but IT WILL FIRE! The only exception to that would be bad ammo and at that point just pull the trigger again, no need to clear a dud or a jam. Also they have real small frames and are easy to conceal.
