Don't buy into the hype that 9mm can't stop someone. If you're using quality JHP you've got as much chance stopping someone with 9mm as you do .40S&W or .45ACP. Just remember, the diminuitive .22LR commonly causes the most gun related deaths in the US annually.

I prefer to carry a 1911, but they are on the large side and don't meet your desires of being easy to break down and clean.

Springfield's XD line is easy to strip and clean along with being highly reliable. Glocks are the same way and I've heard good things about S&W's M&P line.

I'd avoid Kel-Tecs, they seem to be real hit or miss on the quality of manufacture. Not something you want to trust your life to (at least I don't).

IMO stick with 9mm or .45acp. .40S&W penetrates marginally better than 9mm but has a much snappier recoil that isn't conducive to extended range sessions but does not penetrate as much as .45acp which has a gentler recoil.

And most important of all, practice, practice, practice. Shot placement is key.

Default New Gun?

I know you said you dont want a desert eagle...... but, go to your local gun range and squeeze the trigger once on a 50 CAL. and youll fall in love with it, just hold on tight

Zero, you want a lot of things that usually don't go hand in hand. stopping power, cheap to shoot, and easy to conceal.

I just bought a Seecamp .32 ACP pocket pistol for deep cover. it fits in my pocket and no one can tell I'm armed. Sure, it doesn't have the impact force of a .45 or .40 S&W, but since most gun fights are close range, shot placement is the key.

I'd suggest going to a range and shooting some pistols in different calibers and configurations to see what you like. Guns feel different in different hands so you want one that feels good in your hand.

I have fired one and at some point i would def like to own one. I would also like to own a bunch of other cool guns..A 50cal doesn't meet my needs right now. I would need to carry the thing around quoting Bricktop from the movie Snatch all day long and my English accent isn't too good...

I would like my first gun to be more of a tool that I can use in a bunch of situations and not something that belongs on a movie set...

Check out the Glock 19 and 23, not too big or too small, easy to take apart to clean. You can buy 9mm ammo a little bit cheaper than 40 S&W, I prefer the 40 but would trust a 9mm just fine. I carry a Kel-tec P32 all the time, but I have worked on it to make sure it works. I also carry a Kahr PM9 when I feel I might need a gun more than normal.

Depending on where I travel dictates what I carry.
Normal day to day and around my house, Kelt-tec P32.
Showing property or downtown Atlanta, P32 + Kahr PM9.
Traveling out of town, P32 + Glock 23.

I find it funny and disturbing at the same time knowing that Kahr Arms is owned by the Unification Church...

gard, how do you carry these guns? for instance, when you take your clients out, do you have 2 guns in holsters on your belt? that might freak me out a bit...
