My point on the 20's being extreme is that the cost of new 20" tires will be even more expensive than the already expensive 18" wheels. The lower profile tires will tend to a harsher ride compared to an already stiff 18" 45 series tire. With 20" wheels and no dropping of the car, the gap between wheel and tire will look larger than with the 18" tires, even if it isn't. Also having the mass of the wheels further away from the center of the wheel means greater rotational interia, so it's harder to accelerate and decelerate the wheel/tire combination, even if it's the same weight. Probably won't need upgraded brakes, but it's something to consider.
So looking at all of these considerations, I personally am staying with 18" wheels.
