So I'm in the market for a new bed. I already know that I'm getting a king size (eastern king) but am totally confused when it comes to buying one. The instinct is to get the best price but this market is truely you get what you pay for and seeing that matresses are expensive you want to make sure you get the correct one. I know it is probably going to come down to trying one out, but hey usually you only get a few minutes in a store, you don't get to take a nap or anything and definately don't get to try anything else out either for that matter.
So I have been looking at getting one of those adjustable air mattress. I have been looking at Sleep Number, Select Comfort, Beauty Rest, Comfort Craft. There are at least twelve different air matress manufacturers and at least 35 different inner spring companies.
Anyone have an air matress or can suggest one to look at? Cost of air mattresses range between $1200 to $3000 depending on brand. Any one maker better than the rest?
I tried to check over at Consumer Reports on line but need to be a member.

I bought a Simmons Beautyrest conventional king size for about $1300 a few years back. It's pretty nice, firm with a pillowtop.
I have to say that it's the best purchase I've ever made. I had no idea how bad every other cheap bed that I had ever owned sucked until I slept on this one.

There's a place called Mattress Discounters (I think but I'm not sure) where you can get beds on the cheap. It's going to be stuff like last year's models or factory defects (meaning the stiching is off-center or something minor that doesn't affect the comfort) or the matress and box spring are mismatched. IMO, none of that stuff matters because its going to be covered by sheets and blankets anyway. I got a Simmons queen-size pillow top for $300. Totally worth it since the comfort is the same as a brand new "showroom floor" model.
Yeah the Costco here has a Seally Posturepedic for like 657 for the king size with the twin box spring. I'm just not sure what type of bed to select, spring or air. This weekend I'm actually going to a store with a large variety to see what I get talked into.
Hot Foot, I checked that site before. Some good reviews. I was trying to find a non biased site that gives comparisons over all the mattresses.
Any one belong to Consumer Reports? I found an article on their web site, it was November of 2004 that compared the air mattresses but unfortunately I have to pay to read the article.
Ok I dropped the air bed thing and now looking at getting a Simmons Backcare bed. Don't exactly know the brand name, egt in to that, but it has a pillow top and is around $1300 for the complete set up.
Ok, on the name. As I have found out, I guess the bed manufacturers have the market cornered as well when it comes to distribution. So I went to one local place, found the bed got the price. The next day I spent like a half day trying to get a better deal. The rest of the stores in my area either they didn't care Simmons or if they did then they only carried part of the line or they had things that looked similar but labeled differently or similar but different material. So basically I found it impossible to find the exact same bed in a totally different store. That way there they never have to do the we will match thing and if someone put the product on sale they don't have to. They also can keep the prices as high as possible.
Damn dirty bastards!
You can't even check on line because you don't know what the name of the mattress is that you tried in the store to match to the online versions.
When I did find something that I thought was close to what I tried, the difference in price was not worth the online hassle, usually only a hundred or two.
So needless to say, later this week I'll probably go ahead and order the Simmons Backcare pillow top from the local place I tried it.
Any way to get a better deal fromthe store?

Yeah I tried that one but I felt like I was sinking in quick sand or if I rolled over it felt like I was moving in slow motion. Kind of hard to get out of.
