I just read an article about how Europeans get a mandatory 4 weeks vacation time a year and an average of 6. They also work an average of 35 hours a week.
Anybody else feel like they are trying to cram 4-6 weeks of activities into 2 weeks of vacation time. It's a disturbing thought that if I move to Europe I'd probably see my family more than I do here.

Yeah something really sucks in America. Way too much work, far too little vacation time........except for government employees who don't "work" enough.
I remember growing up how we always used to get the Japanese ideal of the tireless worker held up. I now realize that America in general works more hours than their Japanese counterparts (yet the illusion still holds that we work less than them.....go figure).

If the pay is still the same or more then usually your benefits suffer.
Salary employees that work excessive hours and do not use their vacations should be receiving some type of paid compensation that is equal to that area of work. If they are not, I do not feel sorry for them. Time to move the hell out.

I have a freind who came over from Scottland and it is true about the vacation time. I also thought he told me that it was PAID as well. Not only do you have to take the four weeks off but you also got like three additional to take as well, plus holidays. I'm not sure how salaries compare, cost of living and what not but every time you look they all seem to take great vacations as well. Before he came to the states, he used to come and vacation here as well so I don't think they made a bad living over there.

Vacation??? Shit I get no paid vacation and no benefits whatsoever (yes that includes no health insurance)
But I couldn't agree more with Jaylin
Thanks for agreeing with me, but you need a new job.
Eh, every job has it's pros and cons. Obviously the downside to mine is the lack of benefits but that's what you get when you are 1099.
On the upside, I make my own hours and paycheck. I was making six figures by the time I turned 21. Plus everything in the real estate/lending world costs me a fraction of what is available to the general public.

Still does not matter if it is paid or not! You still only get paid for the days you work, plain and simple. The more money you make the more responsibility and stress comes along for the ride as well.

Sorry Hot Foot just had to use the new BS flag I found. Any way for the majority of cases I would agree with you. However after seeing stevedors "work" I have to say that they do not follow this normal trend. They make an obscene amount of money for the time they are actually on the job.

It may be true that we work more than any other country in the world...
But there's also a reason why we are the richest, most powerful, most influential country in the world.
I personally have no beef with a 40 hour work week. In college, I would work 40-60 hours a week while taking a full course load (14-16 units a semester) and for about a year that was 60hrs on the graveyard shift. In the summers I would work 80+. I remeber one week where I put in over 100. 40 hours a week is not that bad.
If we didn't work hard, we'd just be Canada. Is that what we really want?
