I was big into the Toyota family before the G and a lot of people on the forums that I was in had the IS. I looked at them before deciding on the G as well. From what I've heard they are very nimble in their handling but are lacking in the motivation department. Aftermarket support is very strong and the engine can handle lots power if you want to go forced induction. I like the interior and still prefer it over the G's. It seemed smaller the G sedan as well.
I'm not real into aftermarket modding so the G was a better fit for me out of the box. Hope some of this might help
he's pretty much set on getting it. Sportiness isn't really an issue. He doesn't drive aggresive and he rarely floors it so acceleration numbers are moot. Just making sure there aren't any major tranny or engine problems he should be aware of.

Nah it's a good grand touring kind of car, which seems to be what your friend is into (at least until you torch him with your car).

i doubt that situation will ever come up. He speeds on occasion but doesn't race. He was jus looking for a cheap used luxury car with good reliability and looks. He does agree the G35 is 100x better and would've opted for it but he couldn't find one in his price range
