Can anyone give me some insight into purchasing a pool table. Where should I purchase one from? Is there that big of a difference between slate and non-slate tables? I would like to spend less than 2 grand on one, but there are so many out there. Any help would be appreciated.
From what I've seen/heard slate is the better option. Depending on your living situation I would probably recommend a 3 piece as it won't be as hard to move compared to a 1 piece. My boss gave me a 3 piece one and I love it. We tried moving it in one piece to get it over to my house. Bad idea. My back still hurts....
I had no idea how friggen' expensive good pool tables are until just recently. I bot the 9' slate table below and all accessories for $1k. Only a couple of years old and hardly even used. He said well over $2k new for the table only but, when we bot the house, it was cheaper for the seller to offer it to me for that price rather than pay to move it! I was hesitant at first but after doing a bit of research realized I got a very good deal. Sure is fun!
What kind of balls do you have dholly? Elephant balls were/are the fad now with their marbled line (called "Beautiful Balls"). It's a bit funky to me, I grew up playing with the good old plain balls.
Besides aesthetics I can't really see the need for different balls, but then again I really haven't seriously played in about 10 years. Anyway I don't think I can work balls in this post anymore.
Jaylin - Whatever you decide to get, just remember to protect your balls, you don't want them to get chipped or busted.

Speaking of balls. Last night, I had my cue stick cocked and loaded to slap my shiny white ball to stick the nine ball in the corner pocket but low and behold my balls ricocheted off the side cushion and went in the other hole.
Always will be a fan of the old small coin operated bar tables. Bought one in the mid 80's for my house and had the coin slot changed to one quarter a game. It was like having a piggy bank to help pay for the supplies. Being a commercial type table everything was built to last a long time.
dholly that's a very nice game room you have there!

I kinda wish our table had maroon felt, that always appealed to me on a antique or classic style table. That modern look doesn't seem right to me.
My friend had an off color like this. It just doesn't look right. Play on it for a while and it really wears on you. A nice simple green color is much easier to deeal with when playing for an extended amount of time.
