I think that the cheering was for him running 8.X seconds for the first time. I sincerely doubt think that he would have done something like that on purpose.
If nothing ever ended badly then nothing would ever end.
The original G35Driver post indicated he caught some kind of a crease in the pavement that shot him over to the left.
I thought the cheering was because he had a miraculous save (from not turning himself into a vanilla shake). In fact both drivers did a good job to prevent a pretty killer crash.

A driver lost control at LACR while Randy and I were there watching and the initial reaction is shock and then everyone cheers when the driver is able to save the car.
