Default Car problem question

Our other car is a '97 Cavalier. It's been leaking some type of fluid for a couple of weeks. I was going to make an appointment to have it looked at somewhere but thought I would check the fluid levels to see if I could tell what exaclty is leaking. I'm about as mechanically inclined as a chimpanzee and I mean no disrespect to Chimps.

I open up the hood and notice that there appears to be a cap missing and fluid around the open, threaded whole. The oil, power steering and brake fluid caps are all there so I assume it is the transmission fluid cap. I have no idea what happened to it. The only thing I can figure out is that they checked it the last time I got the oil changed and then forgot to put it back on. That was almost 5 months ago and I don't think it's been leaking nearly that long.

Anywho, I was just wondering if anybody knows where I can find a diagram of the engine compartment to see which cap is really missing and where do I go to get a replacement. I don't know what happened to the book that came with the car.

Thanks in advance.

Go down to your local autoparts store. They have the Chilton's books or similar. Hopefully it's not shrink wrapped. If it isn't shrink wrapped, just skim the book for the applicable cap. If it's shrink wrapped, then you can buy it, it's only going to be like $15. Pretty good to have for your car anyway.

Your local library might have a collection of Chilton manuals as well.

Do cars have transmission fluid caps? What color is the fluid?

No owners manual. Bought the car used and it didn't have one.

Brown fluid.

No pics until I get home. I'll try to post one tonight.

Brown fluid? Could it be old antifreeze? Tranny fluid is red.

Sounds like you'll need to go to the local parts store anyway. If you are not inclined to pick up a Chilton to get more mechanically inclined, you can easily ask the guy at the store to tell you what it is and sell you what you need. And no, there is no trans. fluid cap.
