Well, basically the article is saying that manuals are more of a hassle for drivers today and it might get phased out in the near future. This is kinda sad cuz I like playing with a stick, so to speak. It just makes me feel more of a man, even tho that's not saying much[] But anyways, I'll be sad when autosticks and Tiptronic take over.
I don't think MT will ever go out of style for true car enthusiats. As long as there is a demand, they will make them. And continue to charge more for them. grrrr!
I've been hearing the same thing for a while. Hopefully technology will eclipse the laziness of the american driver and we can all have ferrari quick SMG's. If not I'm gonna be super pissed.
I think we'll see a shift to SMGs, but there's enough of a market that manuals won't disappear for a while. Also, I believe manuals are still very popular outside the US.
Bush voters, there's a reason to care what the rest of the world thinks []

I don't think it's a bad idea to cut back on them, but they would still need to make some for people to buy. I personally love the feeling you get when shifting through the gears and if a 6mt was available when I purchased my car, then I would have taken that over an AT.
I could see a day when ATs took over certain vehicle market segments, especially those which fit the non-shifting demographic. However, there is no way that MTs would go away for those who want them in a performance vehicle.
Also, I would be quick to point out that through the years, there have been numerous resurgences of sports car mania, muscle cars, and a craving for more horsepower (the 1970s/early '80s gas crisis notwithstanding).
--Driver distractions. Motorists have enough responsibilities behind the wheel, observers say, and would prefer shifting not be among them.
Smith said increasing driver chores such as children, on-board information and entertainment devices, and even eating require more attention than in years past.
"How can you possibly dial your cell phone, drink your coffee, put on your makeup and shift?" he said. "People don't want to drive. They want to do other things."
I hope the guy that got interviewed for this section gave a tongue-in-cheek response. If not someone needs to slap him in the back of his head, this is pretty much a list of what you shouldn't be doing when driving.[!]

I thought that day had already come. I ruled out so many cars before I found the G just because I couldn't get a manual let alone a 6 speed. Hell the new M5 won't have manual.
