You're right. To amend my statement, I think parents should treat kids like adults (eg respect them and let them learn from their mistakes sometimes), but they also need to know how mature their kid is so they won't overburden them. For example, if a child is still very susceptible to peer pressure, a parent shouldn't put them in a situation where they might be at risk. If a kid has already proven they are responsible, then they deserve more leeway.

You shouldn't force kids to grow up fast, but if they do on their own (and some do), they deserve to be treated as such.

it really sucks....people really need to be careful especially with kids these days...too much TV and movies, and not enough supervision.

Yah we all send her our sympathy and some donations for the funeral. It's really SAD. Apparently the driver (the 13 yr old) her mother has some sort of illness and allows her to drive ( Do not ask me why...I think it's stupid to let a 13 year old drive) Anyhow that's why she knows where the key is too.

I'm not sure how it ended up being a PJ party..my coworker said that it was a regular party or birthday party that turned into a sleepover. They all got into the car to joy ride... assuming that the 13yr was an experience driver since she drives her mother around. Obviously she tried to show off and lost control. It's just a sad story. And yes that Iron fence is just horrific. And I can never understand why it's the driver that always survive!?! I think they're trying to charge her as an adult...which she should be.

This is was such a senseless thing. really depressing and sad.

I can not begin to comprehend the loss of a child. It may be helpful to remember however hurtful and sad it is today - somehow, sometime, tragic deaths like these can lead to something positve. Perhaps the ripple effect will create a higher awareness among the community kids of the dangers associated with underage joyriding, and force Compton parents to reassess their responsibilities as parent and role model to their children. So many things were/went wrong but the mother's advocacy of her daughter's law-breaking so long as it benefitted her is simply unconscionable. She will have to deal with that burden for the rest of her life.
