HR = Human Resources, aka the people who are the ones generally tapped to deal with harrassment and other interpersonal issues that people face in the work environment.
It's great that the term doesn't offend you, GZire, but I know many who equate it to the "n" word. Best bet is to not use it at all.
I dunno about how it was in the olden days...but I think my generation has kinda seperated the racial slurs from their derogatory meaning. Ppl call me chink...and I'm fine with it. I call this guy in my pe clase that is black .. darkie...he chill with it. I guess times change...the word nigger is now probably used more for fun than as a word with horrible meaning. To me its all good...I have friends of all kinds...and to me as long as ur cool, we is cool.
OK www.alllooksame.com at least everyone can agree on that.

Say that to a bunch of black guys who you do not know, and chances are, you WILL get hurt.
As I said before, it's not insulting to me, but then again I'm not of the age that I would've been exposed a lot to the term. We did not have the internment camps here like your parents/grandparents would have experienced in the mainland, so we don't tend to have near the amount of bad memories that you folks up there would have experienced (and linked to the term Jap).
Also, in Hawaii we tend to be less insular, so you've got a Japanese living next door to a Chinese family, next to a Filipino family, next to a Hawaiian family, etc... Neighbors are as follows;
1. Okinawan (Japanese) / Chinese
2. Okinawan (Japanese) / Filipino
3. Service guys from Tripler (don't really know them)
4. Caucasian
5. Chinese
6. Etc....
You grow up with these folks (and marry them) so a lot of the things that would tend to upset communities in the continental US do not bother us down here.
Iron, it's not that I don't have pride in my race, it's that I've learned how to live and accept people of different backgrounds and ethnicity than me. For the record I'm an American and that's what matters to me.
Now the French piss me off......

It's really too bad we have these racial issues here on the mainland, but the unfortunate reality is, they are still here and people are bothered by them.
Integration of our children is the key kloh. When you're young you don't care what ethnic background your best friend is and that stays with you for life.

You hit the nail on the head. I hear the word Jap and I think of my grandparent's stories about being interned.
Reem not being 100% pure Hawaiian is not necessarily a bad thing. When I think of people who want to keep the sanctity of race....I think about Hitler.
We are all the same race, we are the human race, I do not care if a person is African or Asian, merely that they are a good human being because we have way too many bad humans.
