That said, the rest of the world sure does like our money and would like to continue selling us stuff.

Both. I recruit for my company, and we, like many other tech companies, are having problems finding good engineers. American universities are graduating fewer engineers every year and the demand is increasing. This has been discussed at length in many tech companies and journals lately and in generally accepted to be truth.

Take Canadian workers as an example. There is a disproportionate number of Canadians at my company (considering we're in Texas), and they are paid the same as US citizens. In order to hire a foreign national, we have to go to considerable length to prove to the government that they are better than all the American candidates who did not get the job. The reason we jump through all the legal hoops is because they really are better than many of the Americans we see.

You remind me of Barack Obama. Not because all of your positions equal his, but because you have articulated them with skill and tenacity. [cheers]

And you're right, where is Semi?

Well Struan,

I said that our economic relationship is symbiotic. Everyone needs each other. It's just that America has much more leverage and pushes it. The rest of the world doesn't like how we play, but they have little choice.

With regards to the job and outsourcing, hire my brother in-law. Mechanical / Electrical engineer, class of 2004 San Jose State. He's having a difficult time finding a job due to not enough jobs and too many candidates. I don't think he wants to move to Texas though.

You're right, jobs are hard to find right now. It was hard when I graduated and probably won't get better for a while. But, and no offense to your brother-in-law, most companies raise their standards in hard times and only hire from the top tier of graduates. If a foreign national is in that top tier, they will still be favored over Americans who are not.

This is going to sound pretty jerky, but I should amend my earlier statement to say the US is producing fewer engineers and fewer outstanding engineers compared to some other countries.

As US citizens we have the to right to pursue happiness, it was never said the government would make sure we had happiness. It is up to us to go out and make it for ourselves.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
You're certainly right. A specific problem I have with the fundamentalist arm of the Republican party is that, while they say we have a right to pursue happiness, they also tell us what happiness is! Many people would be very happy to marry the person they love, but the government tells them that they do not have the right to pursue that happiness!

And please spare me the slippery slope argument about gay marriage leading to anarchy, that's simply ridiculous. My point is that you support a government who says the same thing you do about pursuit of happiness, but instead is actively trying to deny that right to people. Don't vote for what they say, vote for what they do. They're not doing what you want.

<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

I actually wish gay people could get married, let them have to get a divorce when the separate, let them be able to have all the same things NGP have.

I voted for Bush because he is closer to my beliefs than Kerry, I am a Libertarian.

I believe all people should be able to do what they want as long as it does not interfer with other people. If you want to be a bum, fine, just don't ask me to pay for your rent.

Booooo
Booooooooooo
You're only libertarian on a couple select issues if you think Bush is on your side.

Here are some thing things that are not libertarian:
* The Patriot Act
* Sponsorship of faith-based organizations
* Big government
* Preemptive warfare
* The TSA
* Gay marriage bans (or freakin' constitutional amendments
* Anti-sodomy laws
* Anti-abortion laws
* Awarding contracts to crony corporations
* Increased government spending that leads to a record deficit

Sure, liberals feel the government should do more than most libertarians want. But Bush wants even more than that. Libertarians don't just want fiscal liberty, they want social liberty, which Bush is dead-set against.

Same thing, though, if you want to put your penis in another man or abort a fetus that is growing in your body.

Is wearing a condom a pre-emptive abortion?
