OK, not trying to start a flame war here, but I'm seriously considering buying myself a game console and would like to hear some perspectives on either. From what I have heard, the XBox seems to have better graphics (although I may not notice the difference) in part because of somewhat newer technology, easier online gaming and some other technical advantages. PS2 seems to offer a lot more game titles but I doubt I'd ever try so many games to benefit from this. I'm a bit concerned that either will be replaced by next generation models in the next year or so.
Anyway, any thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Strong points are basically what you said. I don't know if either console is going through major upgrades soon, but the pricing is fairly good right now and probably not worth waiting for any upgrades.
I solved my dilemna by buying both. Of course I don't know where I put my PS2 right now, but I'll find it someday.

Xbox all the way. It is a better machine all around, and has much faster load times, which is the bane of all console machines. Also, assuming you have the proper stereo equipment, it will give you true 5.1 optical surround sound, the PS2 is incapable of that. One other thing, the xbox has a hard drive, the PS2 does not (you have to pay extra for it). This means the xbox can save a whole lot more crap on it, specifically music.
P.S. By this time next year, the next generation of console machines should also be out.
Xbox2 & PS3 should be out in a year or so as evil said ... graphics and harddrive and everything is nice but what's important is how much you enjoy the games available for each system. Just go out and figure out which console has the games you want. Xbox has fewer titles but I like the xbox titles more ... halo especially ... it may be overrated but plenty of fun, especially when you play on multiple screens. Just wish Gran Turismo were on xbox
From someone who has both, I have to go with the box. Even as much as I hate Gates, it is truly a superior product. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect. I actually think the controls for the PS2 are far better, but the graphics (especially on a big screen) are far better, and the hardware is much more flexible. The biggest advantage though has to be the inclusion of a hard drive. Having to fuble with memory cards on the PS2 is such a pain in the ass. It took me a long time to come to this conclusion, especially since I was a die-hard PS2 person. I was actually one of the people that camped out 12 hours to buy it (very geeky, I know).
I never bought an XBox. It's all about the software. I already had a PS2 and there wasn't anything on XBox that I wanted or didn't already have for PS2. But then again, I don't play all that much anymore. Mostly just Madden and GT.
Well, I made my decision, albeit a bit unexpectedly. Happened to be at Target during lunch and wandered over to the electronics section (it had just dawned on me that I had a $50 Target gift card!). No PS2 in stock but they did have Xbox, so I went ahead and bought it. Got a couple of games (Project Gotham and the Spongebob game - for my daugher.....seriously). I saw in the paper this morning that Fry's had the wireless controllers on sale for $19.99 which also played into the decision.
Thanks for all your feedback. I kinda determined that I couldn't go wrong with either one. Fate seemed to push me in the Microsoft direction! Now, I just gotta figure a way to skip out a bit early today!

I have a mod'd Xbox and i LOVE IT. With the Mod'd box you can basically rip games to the hard drive. The mod also allows you to increase the hard drive.. i know have a 120GB w/ over 30 some games and still have about 40% of the drive left.

it's actually pretty easy to do. I want to do it but my laziness keeps me from it. Like Jam said ... you can save big bucks if you want to by just ripping games or downloading them ... not that I promote the illegal use of such things
Forgot to tell you that if you want to use the optical surround sound, you'll need to buy the appropriate cable separately. It doesn't come standard with the xbox, so that they can steal more money from you (it's not cheap).
Genius....yeah I figured that out after getting everything set up. I had to buyone A/V pack so I could run the picture through my HT stereo via S video and I thought it had the digital audio cable in it but it wasnt! Arrrggghhh...One more trip to my local "big box" electronics and another $20 to spend. The good news is I've been sick all weekend and pretty much spent two days on my couch either watching baseball, football or playing Project Gotham 2!
