What state is your official residence? If I were you I'd be looking at what state is going to have the least sales tax. DC has a slightly higher sales tax than Hawaii, so you'll end up spending a bit more money when you register the G in DC versus Hawaii.

I am actually a legal resident of IL...and can keep that for a while, so that might help.

True, but I don't have any money now! I will be wandering for a few months between here and DC, and don't want to be making pointless car payments for something I am not even driving...plus I will not exactly be employed till I get to DC.
