Funny. Some friends and I wanted to organize a cannonball back when we were in college from Atlanta to L.A. Never happened, but Im sure it would have been fun. We were going to have checkpoints across the US, with each team checking in at the hotel as soon as they arrived. The car with the shortest sum of times would be the winner.
I didn't think that an event like that would be illegal. Now, if you got caught speeding then that is a different story. It is not like you are twisting anyones arm to speed, although that is the underlining idea.
Im not sure if it is legal or not. I would imagine it is not, as the SCCA runs "rally" events on public streets where drivers have to get closest to a set time on the course. The speed limit is not exceeded, simply a set time targeted for the course. Get closest to the set time, and you win!
I would love to participate in this ... as dumb as this is (same thing dumb ass kids do in their civics and neons but with an older and much much richer crowd) I don't think I could resist putting myself to a race like that
When you sign up you specify which run group (average target speed) you would like to be in. I believe they set the run groups in 10pmh increments. Fastest groups going first. The entire course is unlimited speed. Kinda scary huh?
Never done it myself but did consider it for awhile until I found out about HPDE NASA events. Seems a hell of a lot safer to me then going [jump2][jump2] to the wall out in the middle of no where.

Well if your going to do it you should have already left. This thing starts tomorrow!
I was reading some of that web site. Yeah it is an all out race but it is not to see who is the fastest per class but can get closest to the alotted time for the group. It sounds really complicated in judging the speeds with several factors. If I was there it would be, oh just screw it and try to drive as fast as one can and do it for fun and not the trophy. My time would be way off but it would be fun tearing up some asphalt....legally that is!
