I'm originally from Northern Vermont, so I've seen the leaf changes in October. I thought about a train ride as well, but I'm just not sure I'd want to do that in the US. Europe - or better yet, Russia!

I'd heard about Thailand, might be a good place to kick back and relax while still getting a taste of a new culture. I've also heard Vietnam, but I don't know anyone who has been there. Understandably, I'm hesitant about going there.</font id="size2"></font id="size1">

There is also an upscale train tour of the Canadian Rockies that is supposed to be awesome! October should probably be a good time for it if you don't mind cool temperatures. Lots of wildlife, mountains, and hosers.

HOSERS [lol]...can't wait to see bunch of hosers on my next vacation.
But really, that upscale train ride, fine dining, wilderness, private cabin...that sounds pretty good.
But I would go on another royal carribbean cruise in a heart beat...only if drinks were complimentary as well []
Ive been to thailand. Its cool. I would recommend it.
Ive also done the europe thing. Been to france, germany, spain,uk,ireland, switzerland, austri a,czech republic... prague was cool. I had fun there. I would recommend this before they join the EU/euro and everything gets expensive.
Finally, if youve never been to what used to be USSR, I recommend it. I was in russia in high school, and had a blast. Im sure its changed in the 8 years since I was there.
I think my next trip will be more of asia and probably australia.
I say you go to Maui. I hear it is absolutely beautiful there. Also Tahiti would be nice as well but I hear it takes about a day and a half just to get there from the states.

The flight time from Texas to Tahiti wouldn't be too bad...12 hours over and 11 hours back from Dallas-connecting in Los Angeles. Pretty good considering how exotic the destination is. Maui rocks too; great beaches, dormant volcano, waterfalls, scuba, PARADISE!!
My wife and I would love to ride the Orient Express. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express operates between London/Paris and continental Europe. It passes through the UK, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and on selected departures, also travels through Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Turkey. The most regular journey is between London-Paris-Venice, which can be experienced in either direction but, as noted above, there are additional departures between Venice, Florence and Rome, as well as from Venice to Vienna, Prague and Lucerne and from Paris to Istanbul and Istanbul to Venice. That would get you into a few Eastern European countries in style!

Your choice - day trip or several days depending on itinerary. Because it IS a 1920's train, there are no showers in the stateroom cars, so I would look at train schedules throughout the EE countries I wanted to visit and break up the trip with stops and hotel stays so as not to be on the train more than one nite at a stretch. You could cover a lot of territory, with several hours more to spend in the locations of particular interest, rather than just passing thru.
