Default New Surround Sound for the house

I just got a new surround sound system for my house. 7.1 channels and was looking for a good dvd recommendation to watch. Any suggestions?

Top gun is a good one. So is days of thunder. I saw The Day After Tomorrow, that is going to be a good one for surround sound.

No. Is anything 7.1 yet? Your receiver will probably expand 5.1 to 7.1. What brand is it? I was looking at Onkyos a while ago and they have some wacky algorithm for that.

There are a few DTS 6.1 discs out there.

Use this link to search for DTS discreet discs.

struan,
I have reference series klipsch speakers: RC-7 center, RF-5 front, RS-35 surround, RB-5 bookshelf surround, cerwin vega sub. The nice thing is the speakers come in maple which matches the color of my bamboo floors. (It's a girl thing that they have to match.) Yamaha receiver that can be hooked up to 2 other speakers for another room. Denon dvd also plays superaudio cd's (btw the best cd to show that off is Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon).

Well, that surely will depend on your personal movie tastes. However, assuming you have the necessary discrete decoder in your receiver or PreAmp to go with all those speakers, IMHO, your new 7.1 Surround setup is best utilized for the following Extended Surround formats: Dolby Digital EX™, THX Surround EX™ & DTS Extended Surround™ (DTS-ES™) or DTS-Discrete 6.1™. To be blown away, you will probably want to start with DVD releases in those formats. Anything less (i.e., Dolby 5.1™) may sound good, but not AS good! []

"Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace" is the very first movie to feature the new Dolby Digital Surround EX format. Even up until now, only a handful of movies have been released with the new Dolby Digital Surround EX format. For lists of theatrical movie titles with Dolby Digital Surround EX soundtrack, click HERE for previous releases and HERE for upcoming releases.

Likewise, only a few DVDs released to date have either THX Surround EX or DTS-ES. The first DVD with THX Surround EX is "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me", while the first with DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete is "The Haunting". "Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Ultimate Edition)" DVD features both THX Surround EX and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1. If you're interested in DVDs with Extended Surround sound, these DVD New Releases and Upcoming Releases designate those DVD titles that are available in either THX Surround EX or DTS-ES.

It is very important to do your homework with respect to audio AND video quality. Many AV and HT sites offer in-depth DVD reviews for these attributes, as well as story content ratings and Director's use of surround technology. You will quickly notice that not all Extended Surround format DVD's sound as "alive" or "fluid" as others. Some DVD's are real heavy on the effects, while with others you have to put your ear to the rear surrounds to make sure they are even on!

Dunno if it's your kind of movie, but this review regarding the soundtrack quality on "Lord of the Rings: The King Returns" suggest this is the *ABSOLUTE BEST* to date. Not that the others in the series lacked!

More DVD reviews at: http://www.audiorevolution.com/

P.S. If you haven't yet, get yourself a meter from RatShack and calibrate and position your speakers properly. That makes a huge difference. Enjoy!

I'm single kjel, I'll marry you. You seem like a successful young woman. I can cook, clean, and watch after the kids.

dholly,
Thanx for the info. My taste in movies do run towards sci-fi. I'll take your recommendation on Lord of the Rings. This new Yamaha receiver does decode THX, DTS-ES etc...
I do have a radio shack meter for calibration and using the Avia DVD to help me but the receiver does have a built in calibration.
I'm wondering if my room is too big? 24'x 15' w/ vaulted ceiling.

Ryno,
Hehe. I love gadgets and hi tech toys! If you like my G and my sounds you'll love my throne room. I have a Toto neorest toilet. Anyone who's been to Japan has heard of this. It's the most hi tech toilet/bidet to date.

Is it the one with the little bidet that comes out from under the toilet seat?

If you don't mind me asking. What do you do for a living?
