So I have a bunch of vacation saved up, my roommate is about to quit her job to go to grad school, and a couple other friends are interested...it's vacation time! Problem is, I just put an offer on a house today ([jaw]), so I won't have any money soon. Any ideas for a cheap 4-10 day vacation? I was thinking road trip, but at 9mp$ (miles per dollar), that's looking pretty expensive. Remember, it's 600 miles just to get out of Texas []

Yeah, pretty much. I'm not much for the "seeing cool things" vacations, I prefer the "being in a cool place" vacations. For example, I didn't like Paris because all I did was rush around to landmarks and get my wallet stolen. I did like Munich because I just hung around the city with a few friends, eating good food, listening to music, etc.

Vegas is a great destination...particularly now that they're moving away from the "kid-friendly" approach. Are you thinking domestic or international? I guess "cheap" would mean domestic, but I'm thrown a little by the "Paris" and "Munich" comment.
What about a get away to Cajun country in Louisiana?

Stru, Austin is only about 8 hours (2.5 tanks) away from New Orleans. If you want good food, good music, good scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere... it is definitely the place to be. Not to mention the fact that I could give you tons of really nice places to go to eat at, and the scoop on the local music scene.
I know its out of the country, but have you thought about an all inclusive resort in Playa Car, or Cancun? Sometimes you can find really good deals in the summer. I think I am going down there this summer with a bunch of friends of mine.
I've never been to Florida, but that could be fun. It's a bit east from Texas, but that might be an option. Check out the beaches and scenery...and I'm not talking about Palm Trees. [boink]
Good places in Florida that are close to Texas are Pensacola and Destin. I was in that area over Easter weekend and the water reminded me of that in the Carrib.
Best kept secret in Texas in Big Bend National Park. Great places to see and hike. You'll get an appreciation of what a misnomer "desert" is, because there is a lot of life to do and see. It is one of the least visited Nat. Parks in the continental US-you won't meet anyone just passing through. Of course, if you're not ready for nature and solitude, then you won't enjoy it. If you're in the mood for a wild, busy vacation, and great food, then Memphis or New Orleans has great night life and music.
