So, I ahve loved them since i was a kid, and now I am looking at the gas prices and saying, the G needs an economical companion.
I don't want the newest GSX-R or anything, I would like a bike that won't run me more than $2k, ride well, last me and save me money on gas. I don't want to race, adn I don't care if I look like James Dean... any suggestions?
This is probably not what you want to hear, but here it goes anyway.
If you spend 2k on a bike to help with fuel costs you will still have to buy fuel and insurance as well.
Option 1. Spend 2k on fuel for the G, if you get 15 mpg that will take you about 15,000 if you spend $2 a gallon.
Option 2. Spend 2k on a bike, maybe $300 a year for insurance and then gas. If the bike gets 50 mpg to travel 15,000 miles you will now spend $600. So now you have spent $900 plus what ever money you paid on the bike to travel the same miles.
It really makes more sense to just spend the money on buying gas for the G.
Gard, I like your logic, however, that does not account for the depreciation that is incurred on my G35... I got the car in Sept and I already have 14k on it. We all know that I would not get a bike only for the gas savings of it, but allowing myself som commuting enjoyment and the right here, right now savings of it is much more appealing. That and the fact that I have wanted a bike since I was 12.
As for the RX-8, Mazda was not able to meet my required APR or payments, so I said pass.
If you want it for the fun as well as mileage reduction on your car, then that's different. Just remember to be safe on it, and please take a bike safety course.
Sirmilton 14k isn't too bad. I got mine on July 31 and I have 15k. My school is 25 miles away from my house, and I always volunteer to drive when I go out with friends. Other than that I really don't drive that much.

For between $2k and $3k you can probably find a good used (circa 01 or 02) 800cc Suzuki Marauder. It isn't insanely fast or anything, but is fun and easy to ride (I learned on one), gets 40+ mpg, and has plenty power for riding 2-up on the highway. Mine is an 01 with 40k miles and still rides like a dream, so they should last.

First bike? Ridden street bikes much? Dirt bikes dont count b/c its totally different.
If its a first, get a used 600 of some sort. Id recommend the late 90s yamaha R6/YZF600 or the Honga CBR 600F3. Plenty of power, plenty of parts laying around... easy to find cheap.
Take a saftey course. I hate to beat a dead horse, but they are unsafe ( which is why I have one!) but they can be lots of fun. In atlanta I constantly see people riding like their parents fed them a little too much led paint.
i started with a kaw zzr600e AKA zx6e.. i love it its pretty quick.. im getting my full muzzy exhaust with jetted carbs and k&n air filter installed from the dealer in 4 MORE DAYSSS YAYYAA.. only 900 dollars and that includes the labor.. WHAT A GREAT PRICE! well milty good luck riding!
