What I'm trying to say is this. It's quite difficult to offend an average white American when it comes to culture and ethnicity. That doesn't mean that other are the same.

BTW yes I do think the picture was prejudiced, but I think the world in general takes this stuff too seriously. Too serious and it escalates into violence and retaliation.

of course they do. almost always. that's why i dont get so worked up about it. there are a lot of stereotypes about white ppl that do not ring true for me at all, but i know they are atleast partially fact based... so be it. thats why i dont get what is so offensive about the slanted eye thing. no one has let me know. i mean, a lot of chinese ppl do have slanted eyes. i dont think it's an insult, i think asian girls are hot. i think the chinese basketball team should have retaliated by taking a picture of them pretending to be matadors or eating some chips and salsa and then called it even. but getting all worked up about it like this... you're just playing into their hands.

Ok, where did your forefathers immigrate from? Say if they were from Iceland (from the looks of you in your pics). And I said something negative about Iceland or it's people. Would you be offended? Most likely not, right? I'd bet that you don't relate to your roots and probably don't proactice it's tradtions or even know about Iceland's culture. So how "could" you even be offended? When you don't even relate to anything about where you came from? If someone asks you where you come from, you're reply would probably be Michigan no? I think that there pretty much tells the entire story.

Yes, you're correct most African-Americans do fall under the same logic. Most black look down on recent African immigrants. Also, you don't see black people ban together and revolt against the US gov't when it sets some sort of negative policy towards an African nation. Or someone says negative racial stuff about Africans. Why? Because they stopped identifying themselves as Africans long ago.

Just because other race/ethnicity/etc. didn't find stuff like that offensive doesn't mean they should summairly dismiss it and tell other who might have been to relax as it's nothing. I think we can all pretty much all agree that the ad was in bad taste and something that they should have thought twice about. Nuff said about that. I was then trying to shed some light from my perspective on why many white, or even black, Americans tend not to get offended by this or understand other that do. That's because they are now so far removed from their original culture/etc. that they do no identify themselves with their roots. Since they no longer identify themselves with their roots it's easy for them to dismiss or not even find offensive such materials/act/etc.

i would say 'spic' is a pretty hateful/racist term. anyways, all i ever wanted to do was state my view point on all of this stuff. i realize not everyone is as laid back as me but if you are able to just let things go (obviously there are limitations to that), it sure does make life a lot less stressful

i agree with you 750, when i first read the title of the article on the news "spanish racists photo to chinese" or something like that, I was thinking they would be slanting their eyes behind the backs of some little chinese kids.
now THAT would be messed up because it would be a direct mockery. but when i opened the article and saw the picture, i said to myself... that's it?
