Default Ford's historic loss

Ford posts $8.7 billion loss on asset write-downs - Yahoo! News

OUCH! I hate to see Ford going down like this but this is what you get when you don't have a vision and ignore the consumers.

no surprise. ford is the most boring car company out there. they've been doing way too much refreshing and not enough redesigning. for instance, three of their traditional bread winners are still produced on 1990's platforms! the ranger pickup is on a 15 year old platform. aside from about 6 different headlight and tail light changes, it's the same as an early 90's ranger. the econo-van's platform is even older. and the superduty is once again just a refresh for 08.
they drove the taurus so far into the ground that only municipalities were purchasing them... so what do they do? swap the taurus nameplate onto the underselling ford five hundred... brilliant!

they've relied on truck and SUV sales for way too long and they seem to have the 'if it's not broke, don't fix it' mentality as far as designs go. this was bound to happen.

i assume that since SUV sales are slowing down, that has hurt them tremendously too.

The Ranger is finally getting replaced, can't remember the model year its supposed to drop as though. It's supposed to stay a true compact/light duty truck. Then the F100 is being brought back as model inbetween the Ranger and F150.

i've been seeing the new ranger in magazines for years. let's hope it's replaced for the 09 model year. i can't imagine the average dealership sells even 1 a month... it's so old!

I assume it will be the same size as full-size trucks a decade or so ago, instead of the behemoths they are making now.

i would just make the ranger a tad bit bigger. no one buys these tiny trucks anymore.

No one is buying trucks anymore. Except for people that need it for work.

^^^Brutal write down. At least these guys are taking the hit early and not trying to play funny money like Enron. I wonder if this write down will be used to help hammer the Union and justify major layoffs.
