Why the hell do people rebadge cars that shouldnt be?
I completely understand why people rebadge their Gs to Skylines, cause they technically are, but why do people rebadge their cars from one model to another?
For example, I was out driving and I see a current-gen corvette and as I approach closer, I see ZR1 badging on it. Im like 'wow, I didn't even know they were available yet!' Upon pulling up even closer, I don't see the CF top, or the bulged hood w/ the engine showing, nor the other little mods a proper ZR1 should have. I just don't get why people do it, especially to relatively higher end cars. The only people that would give respect to him for having a ZR1 will actually know what it looks like....so whatever respect I had for the guy driving a vette went down to 0 for making it seem something it isn't
I've also seen this on several BMWs, where guys rebadge their 330i to M3 and honestly expect people to believe that its a M3. Seriously, I have absolutely no respect for those people and even called a guy out on it. He was just embarrassed, as he should be. I can't be the only one who thinks its retarded to do this, right?

Really???
As far as all the other false rebadging, I totally agree...it's just sad and embarrassing. A BMW parts manager once told me the majority of the badging they sell isn't for replacement of damaged/stolen parts, it's for total wannabees to try to obtain a quick, cheap "upgrade" on their ride.....not just to M status, but 760 instead of 750, 335 instead of 328, etc.
I guess if having the label is all it takes to float your boat, it's actually a tremendous savings for them to just buy the label instead of the genuine article.
The only b adge swaps that I have seen that I think are acceptable are when people do engine swaps or other major work to their car.Adding an M/ replica bumper to a 318 does not make it worthy of a rebadge...
in the end I would rather have the sleeper anyways. I think people do it because the majority of the public doesn't know any better and would be hard pressed to actually tell the difference between an M and a non M car
O, i was basically saying that to most people a corvette is a corvette. But car enthusiasts, like ourselves, actually know the difference between a base vette and a ZR1 and all the styling cues that go along with those cars. So, the way I would see it, enthusiasts would give more respect because they actually know what it means to have a ZR1 compared to a base vette.
Does that make any sense? Usually I am the only one that can understand my own rants.

no I knew exactly what you were getting at. the people that would be fooled by a fake badge would know or give a fuck anyway.. those that would care would spot the phony without much effort

still not OK IMO. in that case they should just debadge the car. adding an M3 engine to a 323i doesn't make it an M3. even extensive work - it's not an M3...
