Well, first time I've ever heard of LCMV........yoikes is all I can say.

In papers filed in the state court, Nancy Magee charged that a Petsmart in Warwick, R.I., in March 2005 sold a hamster infected with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, or LCMV, to a woman not named in the suit.
That woman later died of stroke and her liver was implanted in Magee's husband, Thomas, in April 2005. A month later, Thomas Magee died of LCMV.
Two other people who received organs from this woman died and one became seriously ill, the suit says, noting that medical authorities later tracked down the hamster in question and found it to be infected with LCMV.
Petsmart spokeswoman Jessica Douglas said the Phoenix, Ariz.-based company does not comment on pending litigation.

As if the process is not complicated enough, now they are going to have to check for every imaginable and obscure disease/condition/symptom/virus/bug/bacteria known to man because there is a .00000054% chance of catching something.

Can you imagine the questions on that questionaire? And the person who knows that info is basically dead when it has to be filled out.
"Has the person touched a hamster in the last 5 years?"
"Has the person breathed anything that might have made them sick int he last 5 years?"
"Has the person had contact with a person who could be considered sick?"

I am on the fence on this. I really have no idea how prevalent this whole thing is nor am I up on how dangerous LCMV can be. What I do know is those getting transplants are certainly in a very bad way and the smallest thing can greatly affect their health.
What I'd be more concerned with is how the organs from donors are screened to make sure they do not cause greater harm for their hosts than not.
I do hate lawyers though because frivolous lawsuits (and I'm not saying this is one) greatly drive up the cost of health care and a lot of other items in this country.
