4. Can put one foot in front of another.
5. Can make a cup of coffee or run out to Starbucks and get the order correct.
All because the pimple faced kid's pop went to school with my boss and he owes him one.
All that stuff would seem pretty normal by most standards, but it's a clear case of the "old boy" network when the kid I'm interviewing got a degree from some state school with a B average when we're not hiring some kid with a degree from U Penn with an A average, uses the word "dude" three times in every sentence and tells me that he doesn't know how to use a HP 12C calculator. This is for a jr. associate position that starts with a six figure salary. Since my industry is largely a middle to upper class affair, these kids usually are upper class white kids from the suburbs. To think that these morons will be running the company some day makes me want to barf!
cant use an HP 12C!?!? thats blasphemy!!
but like I said, although I'm young to the industry I have seen this happen quite a few times

Not that this applies to all industries or that what I'm saying means anything but...
From what I've seen it's who you know and not all that much on what you know.
My managing director has literally a stack of resumes two feet tall on his side desk, which is pretty much full of guys with pedigrees most would kill for. He doesn't even look through them. The large majority of guys who come to work for our firm are in 2 cats.
1. Recent college/grad school grads who mostly intern with us or become jr. associates. Usually from top tier schools as that's where most of our recruiters spend their time.
2. Those who are already in the business and either get scouted or get "hooked" up.
The majority of the junior guys I meet or interview get here because of a few different reasons, most of which have nothing to do with what they know. They are:
1. Some senior guy in our firm went to the same school as them or their family member.
2. Belong to the same frat./club/group
3. Has a family member (usually mom & pop) that one of our senior d1ckheads knows well or are friends with.
Other than these reasons, those other guys don't have a chance in hell to get an interview.
So the moral of the story is to get to know some influential people and f**k their sisters or something to that effect.

Stick with ops for now Archer. Two of our MD's have ops background and last time I read up, 80% of new MD's in the industry have had ops background. So you're at the right place. Things seem to be changing in our industry especially with regards to new management, as previously most MD's all were from the I banking background. So that's good news for you.

Haha! thats good to hear! Ops is sooooo boring tho! I'm trying to stick it out and learn as much as possible in the interim. I think the trend is because more people are getting their foot in the door by way of ops.

I hear ya Archer. If I was in ops I'd have gone postal long ago. The guys seem way too focused on bean counting for my taste and guys from ops tend to be way too up tight. They don't like to drink either, which makes me think they're commies.
