so i was in DC with my girlfriend all weekend... she had to go for work .. they was a bunch of forclosures she was doing loans for, so i came for the ride.
i spent most of the weekend walking around DC and going to all the museums and saw every IMAX and planetarium show there was....
i'm a space junky... (although i'm not smart) but i found out a lot of "basic" things that im surprised i didnt know....
1- I didnt know the moon was formed from the earth... back when earth was still "fiery" it was hit by an asteroid that almost destroyed it.... it blew out debris that circled the earth for some time... bc of gravity, the chunks slowly went together until they finally formed one large object - THE MOON.
if not for this huge asteroid... we wouldnt be here.
2- this is not new.... but hearing (seeing) this again in the plantetarium scared me to death..... they are a "billion, billion" other stars like our sun, meaning a potential COUNTLESS other solar systems such as our own....
i cant even comprehend the possibilities that opens up.. but it scares me to death.
3- Black Holes... i knew the basics about them... but just heard in more detail... again... scared me to death.... Black Holes are a "tear in the space fabric"... well i can't explain bc i really no nothing about this stuff... but we think that gravity rules, but it doesnt... apparently Einstein figured this out.... there is an imaginary "space fabric" that sort of "creates" gravity from objects (planets, etc) getting stuck in the "fabric".... when this happens... this warps the fabric a bit... this is basically how everythign stays in orbit... like i track....
A black hole is a tear in this.... the force is unimageinable... not even light can escape.... if an object "falls" into it... it is torn apart, torn apart again and again and again.. until its down to atoms, then the atoms are torn apart.
3.5 - they figured out that most solar systems have a black hole..... and they found a big one in ours.. they are "watching" it.... great.
4- solar flares, sunspots -- i'm sure alot of you know about solar flares... you might remember back in 2006 when one knocked alot of GPS and some power out.
i didnt know that it effects everything in the solar system CONSTANTLY... the sun is always emmitting "solar waves".... but the earth has a "field" around it that protects it. except in the northern and southern poles --- thats why the aurora happens --- it's our atmosphere interacting with the solar waves... pretty cool.
anyway, when solar flares happen, it's enough for the waves to break out protective field... knocks out satellites, power, etc.
the one in 2006 was 10X bigger than we have ever seen.. and it was at a point that they were forcasting lower solar energy.. so it really came from nowhere....
so scientists are concerned of what can REALLY happen... big waves could knock out all satellites and power.
alright i guess thats enough for now..... this stuff just scares me.. but also fascinates me.

scared? why? its common space phenomena. things that have been taking place for years now. the black hole in our galaxy has been there for ages. nothing has happened or will happen in our lifetime.
the other solar systems out there? sure, but I'll assume that they are no closer to reaching us than we are reaching them. the closest solar system is a couple BILLION LIGHT YEARS away. alien contact? not happening.

nah im not scared of aliens or anything like that... do i think that ANYTHING (black holes, asteroids, comets, etc) will effect us in my lifetime... HELL NO.... maybe a bad solar flare or two... but that wont kill anyone...
it just scares me on a bigger level... hard for me to comprehend... makes us all seem "small"

One thing that really boggles my mind is the big bang theory, which is widely accepted. The scientists went back in time to like 1/1,000,000,000 of a second after the big bang and found out that our universe was smaller than an atom and it expanded to the size that it is today. I just can't comprehend how this is possible. Also, if our universe is expanding what is it expanding in to. Maybe our universe is something that substains something much greater than our universe? If that's so, think about how small our universe might be compared to what our universe is expanding in to.
Black holes are crazy and by watching Discovery and the Science channel there MAY be black holes in the middle of every galaxy. So black holes are an intricate part of our universe that scientists have yet to solve.
Now scientist are really looking in to parallel universes and taking them seriously. Like Steven Hawkins and some others but of course there is no way to observe this right now but there are theories about how this is possible with string theory and M theory I can't even begin to explain.

I have always wondered the same thing. If they say the size of our universe is infinite b/c its always expanding, what the hell is it expanding into??

I don't think alien contact is not going to happen either, let me rephrase, I don't think it's very likely but I wouldn't put it out of possiblity. Our understanding of space and our universe is very limited, there might be civilizations that could have been around for millions or billions of years, we don't know that, don't you agree? We're just seeing the universe through our limited knowlege and billions of light years away might not matter. For example, Einstein proved that space and time are relative so if some aliens learned to manipulate space billions of light years away might not seem so distant.
I don't think aliens visited earth but at the same time I'm not going to say it's impossible. there are sooooo much that we humans don't know. Think about it, we're just starting to learn about our universe. A hundred years ago people thought that there were only our 9 planets in the universe, then just our milky way galaxy, then in the past few decades we finally realized how big our universe is and how small it was when it was born. Imagine if we were alive for millions of years, how much more we'd know.

yeah the big bang theory.. which i believe in general... is crazy to think about.... and the expansion part... yeah what is it expanding into?? it's like a double negative....
and think about this..... does the universe end somewhere? or does it never end? if it ends.. whats past that? if it doesnt... how is that possible....?
makes me head hurt.. but interesting to think about... if i ever get stressed about something stupid i think about it and it makes my problems seem trivial.

Fookin crazy, and the funny thing is that the expansion is speeding up instead of slowing down like they thought. This is scientific fact that can be measured, not a theory.

yes true. but it makes my head hurt trying to make sense of it all (j/k)
but at the end of the day there are much more noteworthy to spend our time/money/thoughts/resources on trying to understand and solve.
like fixing the economy. keeping people in their jobs. finding TRUE happiness. discussions about space take up too much space in my day
