States with Highest Speed Limits
Quote:
Top Maximum Speed Limits
80 mph -- Texas (on about 500 miles of Interstate 10 and 20 in southwest corner of the state)
75 mph -- Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas (in counties with less than 10 people per square mile), Utah, Wyoming
70 mph -- Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Washington State, West Virginia
Heres an interesting link about fatal accidents when Montana had no speed limits. Wish they still didn't, it would almost be worth a trip out there just to open it up. Montana - No Speed Limit Safety Paradox - 2001 UPDATE
^^^I generally agree with the article but have several concerns/comments:
1. Autobahn speeds do point that faster can result in less accidents, however the Autobahn is specifically designed and built to support high speeds. In some cases freeways are not able to sustain higher speeds safely.
2. Road rage is real. In general people shift between aggressive and conservative driving habits, many times during the same trip.
3. Lower speed limits were first introduced for energy conservation, not safety. One thing that is counterintuitive is that you can usually service more people by driving slowly. As speeds increase, so do/should the gaps between cars. Slower speeds, smaller gaps, you can usually flow more vehicles. It's more frustrating, but usually serves the greater good.

just to elaborate, it is commonly thought that there is no speed limit on the autobahn. in fact, portions do have speed limits, and other portions do not. you CAN and will get pulled over and cited for wreckless driving. it is not a free for all. those who drive on the autobahn understand the rules of the road and only use the #1 lane for passing (generally). it has been proven that driving over the speed limit causes less accidents than driving under it.
the autobahn in general is much higher quality that pretty much any road we have over here. it is 2 feet thick and thus less cracks, potholes etc. and when the road is damaged, they repair it much quicker.
