My old man was a flight engineer on 747's during the 70's and he told me that most of the time pilots check out to sleep soon after they get to cruising altitude and wake up a little before landing. Most airliners are so sophisticated that they fly themselves and all you need to do is take off and land them. I'm sure things have advanced even more now. So what the problem is???

Not one unconcious pilot, but both of them. Unresponsive & overshot the airport. The flights between the islands are short hops. If the pilots can't stay awake for the 20-30 minutes to fly between the islands what makes you think they will stay awake when it's time to land?

Oh, I didn't know it was for those short flights. Hmm... by any chance was this a yellow plane a little bit shorter than the others???
