Anybody feeling the ripple effects of this crappy economy?
. . . it can't just be me, can it?
I mean, I've been looking since the beginning of January for a new job. I do have a home based job of lending, but that has COMPLETELY soured up. Phone is not ringing anymore and the lending has tightened up completely. So yeah, I'm looking for a new marketing/public relations/writing/editing job and I can't find SQUAT!
Moreover, it has seriously affected my family. My sister lost her investment home. She was in the lending business and her office one day just closed the doors. No more job, no more income. Bye bye house, it went into foreclosure. My parents, also lost 2 investment homes to foreclosure. They're old, so they don't work outside of my Step-dad doing lending on the side, but that's soured up as well.
My brother, who had a 6 figure bonus on top of his salary just a few years ago, is barely making ends meet. He still has his job, but he's laid of over 20 people for Pacific Century Homes. Brand new developments have all dried up.
If it wasn't for my wife having a Federal job, I'd be in the poor house. Needless to say, this is doing wonders for my confidence, pride, and self-respect. Bluntly, it straight up fucking sucks!
So, am I the only one? All you guys still employed? Fuck, a few years ago I was making over 6 figures nicely due to my investments in property and my old design/engineering marketing job. Now I'm clipping coupons for Subway for 2 for 1 sandwich specials in between submitting my resume on Craigslist and Monster.com Yes, it's this bad.
When people used to say the phrase "job security," I used to take it lightly with regard to my old job. I was so confident that I'd never get laid off. Now, I know what the fuck it really means.
Anyways, I had to vent, just a little and I was wondering if anybody else has been affected too.
P.S. I've also stopped smoking weed since New Year's Eve just in case I encounter a job that drug tests. Even that goes against my own personal politics, acquiescing to a zero tolerance drug policy that enforced a drug test. Do you realize how much sobriety sucks???
Not me man. Down here Hawaii is still got the lowest unemployment in the country. We also still have the dumbasses camping down at the beaches and complaining. Let me tell you, if you want a job in Hawaii you can get one now. It's hard to get decent employees now.

I have a cousin who used to do mortgage loans and now sells insurance. His wife is from Hawaii and he's thinking of uprooting and moving there. That's a positive thing to tell him.
It's effecting me in a somewhat positive manner with house prices falling. Houses that just last summer would have been priced beyond realistic contemplation are now in that area where I can consider them.
I'll never get rich working for the government, but I gladly accept 'making ends meet and putting some away' along with being able to goto bed at night knowing I have a job when I wake up the next day.

well i was out of a job for a while when the credit crunch first hit. I worked at a firm who's primary revenue stream came from selling defaulted loan portfolios. If I had been in sales I would be killing right now. But I was an analyst and it was blatantly obvious where the market was going so I got the axe along with one of the senior analysts.....

i'm a mortgage broker, and despite what you hear, things down here where i'm at are just fine. there were a few months that sucked, mainly nov-jan, but things are definitely looking up. my phone has been ringing off the hook. the 10 yr bond yield has helped lower mortgage rates and people are buying and refinancing like crazy down here. granted, austin, tx is probably one if the 5 safest places to buy a home right now, but it's still very encouraging to see something other than a ton of people foreclosing and selling 'cause they can't afford their home.
phelan, as far as the home prices go, "money" is generally cheaper when the economy is "bad." right now, the economy, in quite a few pockets of the country, is horrible(ask our friends in michigan). the feds will encourage people to borrow money and keep the economy liquid by lowering rates and the high home inventories will keep prices low for quite some time. i just feel sorry for the people who either maxed out their equity, are in some ridiculous option arm they handled irresponsibly, or who now live in neighborhoods that look like ghost towns 'cause everyone's gone. the last of the three are really screwed. those are the ones who weren't in it for a profit, and now they couldn't sell if they wanted to. their home depreciates daily.
oh well. everything's cyclical. bad cycles in the economy are necessary to weed out the garbage and keep things efficient. everything will be fine.
gamma, i assure you, a bowl or bowlS will be smoked for you in tx tonight. haha.

^^^Booooooo. As soon as I land a job, I'm renewing my MMJ card and I'll buy the best shit ever! Hell, I'll have it delivered, so there!
You know, your take on the housing market in Austin is quite contrary to what I've been hearing. I know of a few brand new tract developments out there by Pacific Century Homes that are not selling at all. Brand spankin' new, just finished this past year. Good for you that you're phone is still ringing.
I'm going to see a client about a refi tonight. He's in the hole already, used his house like an ATM in the early days, so now it's upside down. I'll see what I can do, but you know

they're not really a big dog down here. that's probably why. meritage, lennar, pulte, centex, and unfortunately kb(man, do their homes suck) are all bigger players down here.
ok...just looked up where they're building. they're in steiner ranch. michael dell doesn't live too far from there if that tells you anything. 'pretty pricey compared to the average, and in most cases, the above average home here. that's why.

and i feel you on the bud. one of my roomates from college lives in laguna and has one of those cards. he's torn both ACLs, so all he has to say is his knees hurt, and he's set.
'gotta love california. traffic sucks, CHP is always up your ass, the speed limits are low, there's a state income tax, shit is expensive as hell, your house may flood, burn up, fall into the ocean, or crumble to the ground at any given moment, BUT you can get bud LEGALLY and you only get an inexpensive ticket for having it on you.

In my case sobriety is great. I don't want some stoner running my ass or my guys over. I don't want the druggie dropping 58,000 lbs of concrete through the pier.
