Looks like stickum. When we used to wrap our ankles we'd use pre-wrap, helped adhesion. I'll bet it's something similar to help with grip.

Ok watched it.

Don't get me wrong here as this stuff looks pretty tough, but it looks like they took a lot of course designs from this...

The Darby Queen obsticle course at Ft. Benning, GA.

It's commonly referred to as the "toughest mile in the world". Many individuals that are winners of ironmen/decathalete/etc. attempt it and fail circumnavigating it successfully.

Stuff looks tough, but with some training it doable.

then 1/2 the stuff I was the guy go through i dont think someone my size can even navigate smoothly. a lot of thos spaces were real tiny...
