Original Dune was more avant garde. It's hard for me to follow too since I never read Herbert's novels. After watching the second one (the European version) it's a little easier to follow.
To do it justice you really need to treat it like the Lord of the Rings and give it a lot more time.

^^^shiiieeet, i liked Lord of the Rings and realize that the trilogy was one long epic film, but even after seeing every one of them, there's no waaaay I'd sit down and purposely watch the movies again. they were good movies, but no thanks. if i want to watch long films, i'd rather watch the Godfather I and II.
^^^In general I think Jackson did a good job with the Rings, but he tailored it whereas I wouldn't, to the idiotic American audience. Dwarf tossing.......weak.
I don't mind longer films if it develops the story or characters better, but today's garbage rarely does that.

Yeah, unfortunately the original DUNE was approximately 4-5 hours long, and the had to edit the shit out of it to get it down to under 2 hours for the final release. I did hear that they have rereleased DUNE on DVD last year with much of the additional couple of hours added back in.
