i guess... maybe somethign liek this...
Yamaha - 600W 5.1-Ch. XM-Ready Home Theater System - YHT-380

it's better than Sony in that price range... but still... well maybe if you arent into audio that much it will be fine for you... just don't listen to better systems.

but if you could spend a little more.... something like this is much more worth youre money and not that expensive.

Harman Kardon/JBL 845W 5.1-Channel XM-Ready Audio Advantage Package

why? you take it with you!
seriously... if you are thinking like that... DON'T buy a HTIB.

buy in steps. first buy a receiver and 2 fronts. if you can't do that... start with only a sub. buy a decent sub.. at least a few hundred dollars... connect it to the TV (audio out)... then buy the next peices... if it's easier for you that way...
i'm telling you, once you get a system.. you will probably get more into it.. then want better stuff then end up throwing away the original purchase. i've seen it all too many times.

SS Nazi will never condone anything less than a $10,000 budget for home AV.

Seriously man. He's talking about stuff that you need test equipment in order to tell the difference........although he's right that Sony is overpriced.

The SS2000 isn't a bad system. Not the greatest, but I suggested that system because not only does it pull audio out of the HDMI cables (most receivers are pass through through surprisingly), but it has 3 HDMI ins, almost no recievers/HTiBs have 3, and Troy needs that. And for the price, it is hard to beat. Sounds decent, not like a separates system though.

honestly... its the customers' fault (just hear me out)

i used to be a manager at Circuit City years ago.... back when i started there (end of 90's) it was a good place... salespeople actually had to wear jackets. we were trained well, sales were a serious matter. some people averaged over $40/hr on commission.

those were the good days.

then come the days with internet, consumer reports, etc, etc.
eventually most people did the research themselves... either that, or they simply wanted the cheapest price, that was all.

there came a time when the consumer no longer wanted the "knowledgable salesperson".... the "smart guy with the jacket".. was now ringing up whatever the customer wanted... and now wearing a polo.

even that went south.... when all said and done (current time), BB or CC won't pay a normal "sales associate" more than $9/ hr.
it's the way the market has made it....
people make decisions on their own and generally do not want to be bothered.

sucks for the people that actually need good help and are willing to spend good money, doesn't it.
If what you're saying rang "true" Nordstroms would be out of business TODAY!

i'm sure this already got answered, but yes. easy question. it makes a big difference. it will also clean up the wires behind your tv and reciever. since it carries picture and sound in one wire as opposed to an optical cable and a component cable that splits into three wires, the HDMI is the easy and obvious choice.

i used to sell this shit too...
