How about gun shops? You mean to tell me that there isn't one gun shop in Manhatten where he could have gotten heavier weapons from? Or the police station even...raid a few squad cars..
400 rounds .45ACP
450 rounds 9mm
100 rounds 7.62x54R
220 rounds .308 (120 in box, 100 in mags)
200 rounds .22WMR
700 rounds .22LR (don't even have a .22LR...)
In my range bag I have probably another 100-200 rounds each 9mm and .45ACP at least and I haven't replenished the ammo stock after the last 3 or so times out shooting.

I was thinking the same thing. I would have had a bunch of of sawed off shotties in the apt for close quarter situations and I def would have thought to carry something a bit heavier while out (with more ammo).
The only thing I could think of was that after a little while of not having to shoot at anything he started carrying less rounds and smaller guns...Personally I would be armed to the teeth if I was in his shoes..
Agreed. I would go with a semi auto combat shotty.........sawed off........arguably the best zombie killer that is not a sword.

Agreed. I got a lot of mouths to feed. Two .45 pistols (only one I really shoot), 1 .40 S&W, 1 .357magnum, 1 9mm, and one shotgun. That's a lot of mouths to feed. I need to reduce.
For the 9mm, I got between 800 and 900 rounds. For the .45, I got about 500 rounds. For the .40 and .357, I have less than 200 And for the 00 shotgun, I have about 100 of the quality shit. If I need more than 100 rounds of 00 buckshot, zombies are attacking us or I'm fighting CQB for some damn good reason!
I don't keep any ammo usually for the 357, it's so frikken expensive. Really, why should 357 be that damned expensive?

You would use a torch to get access, not a welder. I don't think the carrier is all that defensible. In the book Neville chooses a house because it's easier to defend.
Personally I'd go to an armory, should be much easier to fortify and defend. Also the armory should have a lot of supplies and weapons.

What's the Russian ammo for? Hmmmm..........I'll need to do a round count tonight, plan on shooting tomorrow. Got some 147 gr (or 150?) 308 Win I want to try out on my HK91 (along with a trigger job that I had done).

True. I would think that the carrier would be a no no to go into also. It's zombie country.
Hhhhmmmmmm.........you know now that I think about it, wasn't that carrier more of a museum than an active duty carrier?
Police stations off limits too? How is it that his building could be zombie free and a few others were as well?
My point is that there has to be weapons around that he could use.
Chinatown, police stations, any army checkpoints, the boatyard, etc..all places to get guns and ammo.
I am not sure about the aircraft carrier being a museum or not but there has to be other Navy ships around..

Most combat vets prefer the older pump shotguns as they're more flexible with round selection. The semi-auto ones don't handle the lower velocity less than lethal loads.
FNH makes a semi-auto that is adjustable for high/low velocity, but people are reporting problems with low velocity reloads and consumer ammo not having enough pressure to cycle the action even when set for low velocity ammo.

It's for my Mosin Nagant M44. Need to get a couple spam cans ordered while they're still available and cheap.

My point is even though some of these areas can be secure they are large. Large means a lot of time to check for security. Zombies can come in during the night and stay during the day. Also those large places can shield out the sun, so it's a bad idea.
His building was zombie free because it was a small house. In the book Neville chose the house for just that same reason. Personally I'd opt for something more than brick and wood because the Big Bad Wolf might huff and puff.
Now that you mention it, a houseboat would probably be the best.

Zombie guns would have the more lethal stuff. No rubber bean bagging the zombies..........except for 0 who wants some sack action.
