Get BLADE RUNNER, the final cut, in HD. It is stunning at 140" 1080p.
Then get Mass Effect.
U think so...I have been shying away from the older movies because they weren't actually shot with hi-def cameras so I figured they wouldn't look as good.
Sweet set up! I've been toying with the idea of upgading to an HD DVD player (likely Blu Ray) and am intrigued by the idea of the PS3's media capabilities. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know its a good BR player but the idea of having my 20GB's of music right there already hooked up to the whole system (rather than going the iPod dock route) is intriguing.

Yeah, the PS3 setup is the most cost effective home media player. I have had mine for a year now (bought the other one for my parents) and it makes life very easy. I upgraded to a 120Gb hard drive to make room for all my pics, music, and home videos. Not to mention that fact that each video game demo usually takes about of gig of space, so 40 gigs can go fast. Having experienced the xbox 360, it no where compares to the versitility of that of PS3. The PS3 even has built wi-fi, which costs an additional 100 dollars to add onto the 360.
So yeah, definitely look into the PS3, really give you the most bang for your buck, especially the 400 dollar system.
I did a TON of reading last night on the PS3 and will likely pull the trigger on one this weekend. All of this because my daughter bought me Pirates 3 on Blu Ray! Soon, I'm going to need to upgrade my AV receiver (no HDMI) and my TV (no 1080P)!!!
Anyway, one thing I'm still not sure of is how well this thing integrates with an iPod or iTunes. I have an iMac with about 22GB of music on it....what's the best way to use the PS3 to play this music? I have a dock that is currently plugged into my receiver's aux input but half the time I leave the damn iPod in the car or at work. So, can the music (all ripped as AAC, or MP4 files) be copied over and stored on the PS3's hard drive? Can I stream the music from the Mac to the PS3 using my WiFi router? Does the PS3 support all the play list, genre, album, etc., tags already embedded in my iTunes music library?
In the end, I'm probably still going to get this unit but being able to simply integrate iTunes would be a huge win for me.

Glad to hear that your going with the PS3. As far as ur syncing is concerned, i know the PS3 does support a media server, so you may be able to stream your music, but i have never tried to establish the connection. You might wanna do some more reading on that on the official playstation site.
The way I did it was just throw my music on a 2 GB flash drive and just manually transfer them. But then again, I only have around 8 Gb of music. I think, but am not entirely sure that an external hard drive can be hooked up to it via the front USB slot and copy it that way. I can check on that tomorrow and let you know for sure.
Music organization is good, but not great. You can organize ur music by the standard ways (i.e. genre, artist, album, list all...) and you can creat your own playlist, but that can be kind of a pain. But im not sure about the conversion as far as iTunes is concerned with the PS3.
Sorry im not much help on this stuff...i really dont know too much about Mac stuff. But music can definitely put on the PS3 and be fully enjoyed, but it might just take some time and effort to get all of that on there.
There is a lot of ways to customize your stuff and Sony has been releasing some nice updates, so whatever is lacking now will most likely be addressed sometime soon down the road.
Also, if you have PSP, you connect it to the PS3 and control the cross media bar with it, as well as view videos, music and pictures on the PSP...lets hope they can figure out how we can actually play PS3 games on our PSPs. That would be fun.
Well, went out and bought the unit on Friday, couldn't hook it up though that night because I needed another optical cable (thought I had one)....did get a chance thought last night to get it all hooked up, it was rather simple although I couldnt complete the wireless internet set up because I can't remember what the WEP key is on home network Anyway, aborted that effort and just watched Pirates 3.
Picture is pretty amazing...a bit cumbersome using the controller as a remote though....gonna spend some time today researching if i can download the codes to my Harmony remote. Sound is good too, but standard DD5.1 for me at this point (my receiver is a bit old...likely the next investment). Anyway, I'm happy with it and may even go buy a game today! BTW, I think I'm gonna stick a thumb drive a 2GB of music or so in the USB connection and see if I can download and play some music. We'll see how that goes.
Congrats on the buy! I know u'll love ur system. One great thing I know u will apperciate is that Warner Bros. officially signed to be exclusively Blu-ray , so that means when the Dark Knight comes to video ( i know its very far away, but thats how excited i am about this movie)... us blu-ray guys will be the only ones to watch it in its High-def glory
Any game ur particularly interested in? If your a big movie guy, you'll love Drake's Uncharted. The story and characters are done very well. The shooting system is alot like gears of war, and is pretty fun.
Not sure about what game(s) to get at this point. I'm doing my research though. I generally like racing games and have heard that Motorstorm is pretty good although I may just wait for GT 5 to come up in a few months. Other possibilities are Call of Duty4, Madden 08, Dirt...who knows.
I had seen the news on Warner and I also heard that there was some big HD DVD presentation at CES that had been cancelled (maybe because of the Warners announcement). Definitely looking more and more like Blu Ray will be the winner.
i just picked up a 50 inch lg last night and it is wonderful, i stayed up till 2 in the morning watching dvd's and playing ps 3. my wife is pist because it is in our beroom, i almost called off today just to stay home and veg, i am only 22 so i figured i have plenty of time to enjoy hd
