I use adaware every month or so. I've never found some spyware that it couldn't remove.

Edit: Is this forum dead today or what?

Try Ad-Aware. It's a great tool for removing spyware and other parasites.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">
Do it! That will help a LOT. You clearly have some programs installed that are opening popups outside your browser (well, technically it's in your browser, but you didn't open it yourself).
You can also try using an alternate browser with popup blocking (such as Mozilla Firebird) or an internet security package like the one from Norton.

Fwabs believe me I feel your pain. I wasn't nearly so "infected" and it was driving me nuts. I don't want even ONE uninvited application running on my machines. I was able to find, identify and clean all spyware, adware, malware, dialers, Gators etc. relatively easily once I found the secrets.

I recommend you first read this PC Magazine article Spyware—It's lurking on your machine.

Then go to the "Security" forum at http://forums.techguy.org/ info on viruses, trojans, updates, removal tips, etc. This is where I learned what to do. Basically, this is what they tell you to do:

1.) Download current version of AdAware 6 (free) from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/. Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "WebUpdate". Then make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN". From main window: Click "Start" then "Activate in-depth scan". Then click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files" Then click "proceed" to save your settings. Delete any adware identified. Restart computer.

2.) Download current version of SpyBot Search & Destroy (free) from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/. Configure, run and delete any spyware identified. Restart computer. You may also want to refer to this site: How To Install Spybot Search and Destroy .

This will likely clean you up just fine. However, to be certain, it is also recommended that you...start your computer in "Safe Mode" and then run your AntiVirus scan again. Some really bad applications can go undetected until you do this. Before you do this, however, you will have to disable "System Restore". In XP Pro, click "Start" > right-click "My Computer" > click "System Restore" tab > turn off. Make sure you turn it back on after your scan.

After you do all this:

1.) Make sure you have effective firewall installed and operating. You might also want to add another layer of protection with ZoneAlarm. Download current version (free) at: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

2.) Install a Pop-Up Blocker. Consensus says that the best one is currently Pop-Up Stopper by PanicWare, Inc. You can download it (free) at: http://www.panicware.com/. Restart computer.

3.) With IE running, got to Tool>Internet Options>Advanced Tab. Then scroll to "Browsing" and DE-SELECT both "Enable Install on Demand (Internet Explorer)" and "Enable Install on Demand (Other)" option boxes. Click OK.

4.) Run AdAware and SpyBot scans frequently, i.e. weekly, along with your AntiVirus scans.

Above worked great for me, but use at your own risk. Best of luck.

Also while I'm thinking about it, I DID find a program called SpyWare Blaster by JavaCool Software that claims to be effective PREVENTING parasites, particularly those nasty little Active-X control based bastards. The immunize section of Spybot S&D recommends SpywareBlaster for those looking for more activex control.

So, it appears that SpywareBlaster may be the best choice for prevention while Spybot S&D does the best cleanup maintenence.

Download SpyBlaster (free) at: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Also, along the same lines of prevention, you can check: IE-SPYAD

IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once this list of sites and domains is "merged" into your Registry, most marketers, advertisers, and crapware pushers on the Net will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on you.

Again, I hope this helps, but any changes you make to your own computer are at your own risk. A good rule of thumb is never to delete anything if you are unsure what it does or what it is, that way you save your self alot of head scratching later on.

Fwabs, et al:

This is from the TweakXP.com Security Board:<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Staying SPYWARE FREE is one of the most important things you can do to keep your pc running smooth and safe. Spyware will crash your pc, ruin your internet connection and make your internet surfing unsafe so PLEASE follow this thread exactly.

There are two excellent spyware removal apps available and they are both FREE so there is no reason to not use them regularly. The two best apps there are for removing spyware are SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU USE BOTH OF THESE APPS SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES AND VICE VERSA, YOU ARE NOT SAFE USING JUST ONE OF THEM. There is one other app that I HIGHLY recommend is for spyware prevention, SpywareBlaster. This app sets certain registry entries that prevent spyware from ever installing, it DOES NOT run in the background using any resources, you just set it and forget it.

Once you have installed these three MUST HAVE apps you then need to update them and keep them up to date. I would recommend checking for updates weekly, it’s just like your antivirus app, you need to stay protected from the latest spyware out there. To update SpyBot just open the app from your start menu (use the advanced mode option) and select “search for updates” it will then show you what updates are available for download, always install all the updates. Another feature that SpyBot has is called “Immunize”, you will see an icon for it. Select the icon and under “Permanent Internet Explorer Immunity” select “Immunize” this works in the same way as SpywareBlaster in blocking new spyware. It also gives you the option of locking your hosts file against hijackers, I highly recommend using this option as well. To update Ad Aware just open it and select “Check for updates now”. For SpywareBlaster it is mostly the same, open it up and select “Check for updates” once you update this you then must select “select all” and then “Protect against checked items” so that the updates you just did take effect.

Anything these apps find is spyware and should be removed, if you choose not to remove what is found then you have no one to blame if your pc crashes due to spyware or your privacy is invaded (including these companies stealing your credit card number and identity). I recommend doing weekly scans and as I have already said, ALWAYS remove anything they find to keep yourself safe.

One other preventative utility you might want to look at is SpywareGuard (from the same author as SpywareBlaster) - also free ("donationware": www.javacoolsoftware.com

Remember, the XP firewall is as good as any other product at blocking incoming threats (though not as flexible - and it doesn't stop anything going out). Third-party programs may do a better job at protecting your computer than the built-in XP firewall. My reccomendation is to get a free firewall like Sygate or ZoneAlarm (I persoanlly favor Sygate).<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> - Also helpful: HOW FIREWALLS WORK
- If you are having problems with search engine re-directing: SEARCH ENGINE ERRORS - MUST READ!!

Just as a point of reference, as part of my protection campaign I use:

- Passive protection: SpywareBlaster and above IE tweaks
- Active protection: NAV, SpywareGuard and ZoneAlarm (considering Sygate)
- Weekly Scanning: Ad-Aware 6 and SpyBot S&D

This seems to be working well for the moment.

***WARNING***

If you have both ZoneAlarm AND Sygate configured to AutoStart on BootUp, AND TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, you will have problems on a Restart. ZA loads quicker and, when SG attempts to load, it is identified by ZA which shuts it down and then also attempts to Restart your computer. This will continue in an endless loop.

***WORKAROUND***

As the computer attempts to startup, put it into SafeMode (hit F8 repeatedly as the computer is starting up) and open ZA. Change the startup option from auto start to manual. Restart in NormalMode and when all is up and running, open ZA again if you want. Or turn off SG. Or run both, whatever. My thinking was, if one is good, two has to be better. Oh well, just be forewarned.
