this is something to be concerned about, regardless of what you think the cause is. obviously global warming is occuring.
the thing is, as the climate warms, the oceans warm, the caps/glaciers start to melt, less sunlight is reflected from the white ice, the oceans warm faster, ice melts faster, etc.
basically it's going to happen really fast.
so not only will the sea level rise, and my house will be under water... but everything could go haywire. if the oceans warm and the air warms, there will be more hurricanes, tornadoes and other forms of natural disasters...
i could go on and on. there's so many repurcussions... it's scary.
It's debateable if you'd have more hurricanes. Fuel for the weather is the difference between temperatures. As everything gets hotter you might not get that interation between cool climates and hot areas to make sure the storms are being generated.

i don't think the rise in temps and melting of the ice will harm the earth that much. we will lose a lot of animal species b/c they won't have a livable habitat. but the earth changes all the time and overall, the species here are pretty resilient. humans will live. weather might get worse.
the major problem is... the sea level will rise and beaches will erode away. we will lose a lot of land to water. it will wreak havok on the economy as massive amounts of people lose their homes and have to move. it will wreak havok on the environment when we have to start clear cutting the remaining natural wooded areas. this is world wide. our world would be completely turned upside down...
^^^One way to counter the rising oceans would be to invest heavily in water reclaimation. Desalination plants are probably needed in the future anyway in order to serve the population.
I guess the question should be are you guys OK with going nuclear for power? There is going to be the need for a massive amount of plants.

i think we need to slow the population growth. we are growing too quickly... multiplying like crazy. humans are absolutely the most serious 'pest' to the planet at this time...

And the fact is that more stupid people are reproducing at a faster rate than smarter people like that one movie Idiocracy :P . Scary.

it is something we have to worry about as a species, i dont think it's going to be a major problem for the earth and nature itself for the earth is always regulating itself.
what will be threatened is our economy and perhaps, our own survival.
Global warming is happening whether you want to believe it or not, it doesn't have any influence now because it is just beginning. It's like talking to a person about lung cancer who had just started smoking, it's useless.. People only react when their money or lives are in immediate danger, nobody cares about the future. People want good lives NOW, after they are dead and gone who cares about next generations.
This is in no way what I think, but it's just how it appears.
Eliminating CO2 emissions may or may not solve the problem, could it be that the planet earth is on it's slow way of destruction and anything we can do won't help us? Natural order of live, born->live->die.

Quite correct sir. And furthermore, isn't it also possible that the planet naturally undergoes climate changes? Sometimes even drastic climate changes? I mean, don't most scientists agree that the ice age was pretty cold, and that it is no longer that cold on earth? The earth started to heat out of the ice age far before mankind was burning fossil fuels. There are also mini cycles of temperature change on the earth within the overarching changes, kind of like minor corrections to stock prices while the overall track record has been growth. An example of this is that the dark ages were brought on by a 2-3 degree decrease in the global temperature.
I don't belive the theory that humans are solely responsible for changing our planet's climate. Hell, 30 years ago scientists were screaming that we were in for another ice age.... http://www.junkscience.com/mar06/Tim...June241974.pdf
We won't know the truth until it is far too late, just like the science of previous eras, executing one man for going against the popular belief that the earth is the center of the universe only shot ourselves in the foot and was later proven to be false. The same could be true of global warming.

"Really Fast" for the earth is thousands of years. Your house won't be here by the time you need to worry about it.
...until you see that the peak is around .6 degrees Farenheit
Carbon dioxide accounts for less than 1% of the gas in our atmosphere, but about 1/6 - 1/4 of the greenhouse effect (depending on which scientist you ask) which is why it is examined by us so much. Unfortunately, water vapor accounts for about 3/4 of it, so in reality there isn't a whole lot we can do. Carbon dioxide doesn't have a huge impact on temperatures, either. I did an experiment testing temperature increase, and it took about a 900% increase of CO2 concentration to raise temperatures around 5-6 degrees celcius, and I had no water in the chamber (CO2 dissolves in water) either. What adverse effects increased CO2 has on earth, however, I cannot say and no one can, in fact. The debate is impossible to win, because it's impossible to determine who is right. You can't make a model of it because there are so many factors to take into consideration your model would end up being just as large as the earth anyways.

Smoke you're really an idiot. First of all I could care less about what you think about global warming but you still think I'm arguing with you about that topic: Why was the thread closed???
The reason why I think you're an idiot is because you made a comment that was hypocritical IMHO
"sure, there will always be those who have since changed their minds, but dont generalize. most of those people who you mentioned are the kind of people that joined the military for benefits, and not for the country." -Smoke
: Impeachment
Another reason why I think you're an idiot is because of the off hand comment on why your dumbass think I chose to serve:
"honestly I don't care why you or anyone you know joined the military. i don't know anything about you, but I know that you are probably a bigger hot-head than me . you said it yourself, you joined the military after 9/11. so what does that tell me? you joined the military in the heat of the moment. you're suppose to join the military to defend your country at all costs, not pick and choose what you like."-Smoke
You don't know me and don't even try to judge me on why I chose to serve because I very well know what was at stake and I took an oath to serve and defend this country. And if you believe this statement you spit on the faces of those who made commitments to defend this country and those who gave their life to uphold that oath, such as Pat Tillman and countless others. (I only bring up Pat Tillman because he is one example of someone who enlisted in the military after the fact and according to Smoke that's not a good enough reason to join.) And if you haven't done anything for this country who the fuck are to tell people WHY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO JOIN THE MILITARY?!
If you look at what I wrote I said I DO AGREE HUMANS ARE NOT THE SOLE REASON FOR GLOBAL WARMING but they add to it.
So before you try to redirect your argument to this BS global warming subject and try to cover up the real issue I have with you just think about what you were saying. This is why I think you're an idiot NOT because of your views on global warming.

Is it true that if everyone in China and India jumped up all at the same time and farted on the way down, we could go back in time? I'd like to go back before I opened this thread.
