That's pretty much true, at that time anyway, it was the one remaining thing I did not know...but now I do know it, so my statement is still valid
It was only 10 years old when I bought it...and remember, it had only 12k miles on it...it was like brand new!
Besides that, I have a '93 Jeep and a '96 truck that both run just fine ... NO issues other than regular maintenance. (and they don't fail even if I skip that!!)
It has more to do with the BMW being ridiculously OVER-engineered ... to the point of being a P.O.S.
It's sad that you are so captured under their spell that you keep finding excuses for them and ultimately fail to see them for what they are....maybe if you experienced ownership directly, you'd have a more objective opinion
