The original Moto Q really was a piece of crap. The 2nd gen Q9h and Q9m are supposed to fix a lot of the problems with the first gen model but have not been released yet (Q9m was just unofficially announced yesterday). We have 2 Q9hs on campus due to our chancellor being on Moto's board of directors, one for him and one for my brother in law who does a majority of the tech support for the chancellor. The Q9h in my limited time playing with it is nice and the first Moto phone that's interested me in a long time. Trying to figure out a way to score a production one for free through our contacts at Moto for myself.

very short-life battery, other than that i have not head complaints about it.

it's windows based, so it's not my favorite

I have one, I like it. The battery life is short though.

other than the short battery life are there any other downsides? Bugs, etc? The guy I am buying it from has 4 batteries for it so I am not too worried. I will just keep a few in the car and a few at the house plus with a car charger I should be all set....

Yep... Have deployed a few of them. I like the Q more than the Treo 700w I've had for a couple years. Mostly because it has no touch-screen and is fully operable with one hand (my other hand has been busy lately with wax on/wax off as you know).

If you get one, get 2 extended batteries and keep one in reserve. The standard battery is not practical and even the extended one can give out after 6-7 hours of moderately heavy use. My Treo beats the Q in that regard and is why I haven't switched.

Overall the Q's a great PDA imo.

If you're buying a Q now, it is first gen. The 2nd gen Q9s (Q9h and Q9m) have not been released for sale yet and those existing in the wild are preproduction units.

The Q has an under powered processor for what it is and in my experience with an Alltel branded one lags badly in response to commands. I'm far from the fastest thumb typer, but when typing out notes it wasn't hard to get ahead of what displayed with my typing. Ergonomics on it in my opinion are on the poor side as well.

I'd hold off a couple months and get the Q9m when Verizon releases it if I were you.

The only reason I am buying it is because I am getting it for pretty cheap and my current phone doesn't sync to my work email. I have a year left on my contract and I am just ready for something new at this point...

First Gen, just called the Q and CDMA only.
Second Gen, called the Q9 with GSM and CDMA models

So I got the Q from him and used it the first night with no problems. The second day I had it I dropped it in a big puddle of water and it swam for a few seconds. I got the bright white screen of death and now the phone keeps randomly turning off and on by itself every 10 seconds or so. I called verizon and because I have insurance on my old phone and never took it off, they will send me a new one (Q) for $50...so I have to wait until Tuesday to get my new Q in the mail and it is back to my old phone in the meantime

From what I did use so far it seemed pretty cool. I didn't sync up any email accounts yet and actually use the phone for anything other than a quick internet search. It has way more features than what I am used to.

I honestly have never had a problem with my Q and I use it as a modem all of the time. As far as the lag typing that Phelan mentioned, that has never happened to me. Except for the sucky battery life, I really love my Q. It does everything I need it to do and more.
