So all you shooters, if you had the land available for a small 50-100yd semi-private range what would you want? Specifically in relation to the firing line area; stuff like space per lane, etc.

How about firing lanes facing each other so nobody has to clean up afterwards.

Hmmm... firing line... I'd probably want a concrete floor to make sweeping up shells easier. Partitioned lanes so that a hot shell from the guy on my left doesn't smack me in the head. Some sort of small shelf on the partition would be nice too. Shade if it's going to be outside. That's all I can think of off of the top of my head.

Covered shooting area with a concrete slab. Range dividers would be nice, but I have issues with partitions. Everyone bitches so much about brass that I say if you're not man enough to handle it go shoot with the women (as I am the person showering everyone else with hot brass I'm a bit biased on this).
I'd say a good 8 - 10 foot wide lane is plenty good for separating shooters from the next. Need some pipe for targets at 25 yard intervals, it's a nice compromise for setups without having too many or too few.
I also think that you need a place to hang some handbags so Gamma can put up his 28 gauge shotties.

By the way, I've been thinking of starting up a collection again. Well, something like that since my state is a bunch of Nazi's and won't let us having anything more than mere pee-shooters.
I'm thinking of a pistol first. I'm thinking a 9mm or .40 cal. Any suggestions on an auto that's got good reliability/accuracy/etc.? I was looking at the new Berretta PX series. Have any of heard anything about them?

Bit more info on the idea. It'd be outdoors at the farm of a friend's grandmother. Concrete slab and a roof were what we came up with for the firing area and a earthen berm for the backstop. Use would be family, friends and trusted acquaintances.
Not big on partitions myself. Both my Kimber and XD will throw brass a good 10' so having them bounce off the partition and hit me is annoying. I'd rather it hit someone else :P Only time I've been distracted is when one came straight back into my glasses, next shot was in the torso; but low and left of where I had been aiming.
For target frames, I figured build some frames out of PVC that could be torn down easily for storage. Or depending on cost some pre-made ones. Permanent posts in the ground likely wouldn't fly since she leases access to the farm to a guy who bails hay. If the area between the pad and berm is clear he can continue to keep it taken care of.

I love my XD9, and the USP9s and P226R DAK in 9mm that I've shot. The main advantage of the XD is brand new its about half the cost of an HK or Sig with similar shooting feel and you get a crap load of gear with it; holster, dual mag holster, speed loader, and bore brush.

Can't go wrong with Sig. There are a ton of polymer stuff out nowdays (Glock, Smith, Taurus, etc.). Personally I'd rather have a nice Sig, but I caved and have one polymer frame gun.
I'm not a fan of Berretta in general, but it seems decent enough. If I'm recalling correctly, I thought that series has a barrel that rotates, weird.
For reliability, accuracy out of the box, quality, ease of stripping, etc. go with Sig.

Too bad about permanent posts. I'd suggest against PVC although they are simple enough. Wood 1" stuff is fine and if you happen to put a round through it, oh well it's not like the frame shattered like PVC would.

Well I've had a Sig before GZ and I'm looking to get something a bit different. I think I've settled on the Beretta PX4 in either a 9mm or .40 cal. The price looks to be good too at about $500 so I'm gonna try to make it out to a gun show and pick one up. Also, I might be interested in a 1911 variant. So who makes a good one for a good price?

I see.
I would look at Para Ord for a nice 1911 at a good price.

Hey I know a bunch of guys out here that stand in front of hardware stores all day. They'll hold your targets up for about $15 bucks. That's all day too. If you give them a 12 pack of Bud they might stay the week. When you're done they'll just move on or if you're nice enough a drop off at your local Home Depot should suffice for them. You should really check out that option.

You got a link? Also, what are your opinions on buying at gun shows. I've never done it before but I'm gonna makes some time to go to one and do a one stop shop thing. Time is precious.
