Yeah Hexx a lot of it doesn't make sense. Fox News had some students on earlier and they didn't know anything was going on, till they saw some cops walk by the window of their classroom.
Exactly!! That's what I am saying. I can understand if the guy walked from one site right to the next and didn't give the authorities time to act/respond. But 2 hours later the same scumbag walks into another building and massacres 30+ people?? WTF?? That entire campus should have been on lockdown and all classes cancelled until further notice. It just makes no sense to me.
I would guess something like the "fog of war" or in this case "fog of chaos" was at play here. I bet most cops didn't know the exact details of what was up till hours later. That's what usually happens when everything goes to sh1t and everyone only has pieces of the full picture.
I still don't understand why there are people in the best country in the world that feel the need to harm others because their lives are bad. There is something drastically wrong with this guy's circle of friends/family that none of them knew that this guy was at this point.
Just senseless...

yea one of my good friends goes there. he said its crazy, people have no idea what was going on. The police tried to force everyone in their dorm, and it wasnt working since everyone was panicking.
You can bet security will come under criticism, but I think Dude said it all. Confusion all over campus, trying to find a needle in a haystack, etc. Keep in mind, 26,000 students + xxxxFaculty + xxxxAdmin + xxxService + xxxxVisitors etc., etc. Pretty tough [impossible with the resources they had?] to search that many people and clear several hundred acres in 2hrs.
[edit] looks like T/O Blacksburg, VA police force #'s about 50 according to the town website.
so far only one site I saw mentioned the ex-gf was shot at the dorm...can't tell if that is true since I only see one place mentioning the ra and the ex killed at the co-ed dorm.
how can you kill 32 people before getting busted or shot man? bombs do not even kill 32 people these days.
It's very sad for those families who send their kids for education but they come back to them in coffins. If there was a punishment harder than death i would want it for the gunman.

This makes me sick as well. I can't imagine the parents wondering if their kids were OK. I have a son about to go to college. What I worry about now is the 'copy cats'. The sickos that are on the edge and this gives them the 'motivation' to go ahead. Since it's all over the news, this kind of thing always brings out more nut balls.
I guess you are right Phelan. It's just kinda hard to grasp that this guy laid low for 2 hours before he started shooting again. Cops were already all over the place and his description had to have been out there. Also, why was there even a class in session when a gunman was still at large on campus from the first shooting?? Sorry but a lot of this is just not making sense to me. I understand that there was probably chaos but I have to think that a lot of lives could have been saved.
The police believed the first shooting, where he killed two people in a dorm, was an isolated incident.
Hexx, how often in college did people walk by you w/o you even noticing? It probably wasn't hard at all for him to move around between some people not knowing anything was going on and others panicking.
right, but why did they not shut down school and evacuate campus?? and didn't it say that the ppl that died in the 2nd part of the killing spree were in a classroom? what were they doing holding class 2 hours after a shooting, when they did not know who the killer was??

but after the first one, the killer was still on the loose obviously... why not get people out of there quick? or atleast warn them of what happened so they could leave if they choose...

Exactly!! At this point they should have completely shut down the whole school until they knew for sure. After the first shooting, there is still an armed gunman on the loose. I just think it was very irresponsible for the authorities to just assume the gunman had left the campus. That "assumption" caused 30+ more people to die. If campus is locked down and classes cancelled immediately, maybe the gunman thinks twice and doesn't commit the second shooting. In the meantime, the cops may have been able to figure out his identity or maybe turned himself in or killed himself before hurting anyone else. This 2 hour in between shootings is going to be very difficult for the authorities to explain.
Come on guys, you are monday QBing here. The police thought the first shooting was a domestic violence case. They thought it was an isolated incident involving an angry boyfriend or something along those lines. They believed he fled the scene and went off campus. They had no reason to believe he was still on school grounds.
i'd think the cops would take some preventive measures, they should be more cautious.
why do they empty my entire building for like an hour or 2 every time a drunk person pull the fire alarm!
