I love trains! Even though Amtrak has not been making much money anymore, I love taking the train from San Diego to L.A. I'm shocked that they don't have a train going from L.A. to Las Vegas. That would be awesome. Especially if they get a train like the one ^^^ you mentioned in France or the one in Japan.
Trains are cool. When my parents used to live in Pismo Beach I used to take the train to go visit them as the drive sucked. Yeah, I think Amtrak will be going out of business soon. Their cars are hardly ever packed and people just don't take trains like they used to.
I do remember talk of a train to vegas but I think they trashed the idea because of the costs to build the route. Too bad, I think it would have been a money maker.

i'd love to go on a high speed train like that....
does anyone know what train was in Casino Royale? seemed pretty sweet...
Haven't seen CR yet. Well, I haven't had time to watch anything for a long time.
Hmm... well only a few countries around the world have HST's (hight speed trains) so it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out. Here's a list from the top of my head of the countries that do...
1. France
2. Germany
3. Japan
A few other European countries but I can't seem to remember.

Amtrak has continually lost money for years. Since it's federally funded though, it still runs. I wish more people would take it.
I bet if a whole bunch of casino owners decided to create a route to Vegas and offer good food, gambling, and hot chicks as servers . . . the idea could sell.
There are so many different answers to this question, I don't know where to begin.
For starters...
1. Our gov't only talks the talk when it comes to this sort of stuff. Hardly any action taken.
2. Most American's think it's their right to drive their "own" car on their "own" stretch of hwy. I think y'all know what I'm getting at.
3. Our priorities are screwed up.
This can go on and on. Mostly I think that there just aren't enough people willing or wanting to see something like this become a part of our country. I actually think it would be nice to be able to get on a train to NY and be there at bullet train speeds as opposed to putting up with all the "stuff" at airports these days. Then again, HST's could become a target for terrorists too.

Money. If it's not profitable, no privateer will fund it. It also will cost an incredible amount of money, but not until after you get by the environmentalists. Finally you will need to get the Govt to go along, by that I mean the idiots in the legislatures in the states this will affect.

What makes you think it wouldn't be profitable? I'm sure it would be eventually. How else do they keep it going in the countries it is in use?
I think it would be very useful to have between the major cities. One from Boston, through NY City, through Philly, to D.C. would be very nice for people.

are you serious? most environmentalists would be on board with this idea. less people who drive on SUV's and more people traveling by trains. what are they gonna fuss about? an electric train?
it's a money issue, no doubt, but it's also a logistic and american attitude of travel and how we have formed everything around the family car. unlike europe, where people travel over small countries to get to other small countries, with no motels along the way; we have super large states with plenty of holiday inns or motel 6's where you can park your car and stay. different mentality. we have bigger cars too. pack the family in your van or suv and hit the road. when you arrive at your destination, just find a good parking spot.
ever been to France? ever been to Italy? shiit, first figure out how to navigate those antiquated streets, then figure out how to park. parking is an absolute nightmare.
they rely on trains and walking. we don't. we rely on our cars and parking or pay the extra $10 for VIP parking
trains used to be the way to travel in the U.S., but then the airline industry and the automotive industry changed our lives. it is what it is.
still, I would love a high speed train between L.A. and Vegas. I think some people could make a nice profit from that. i also think the environmentalists would be on board with the idea and I think the highway accident rate would decrease on the I-15

I thought there was a train connecting NY City to Philly or D.C. Seriously, at my old job, I used to have a colleague that would use the train all the time if he had the time too. They even had docking stations for your laptops and such.

There are definitely trains but I'm talking about one of these super fast ones.
^^^ohhhh. yeah, like GZ said, it's probably a money issue. I dunno why else they wouldn't build something like that. you'd think they'd try it out there first. D.C. to NYC or NYC to Philly, NYC to D.C. Just make a few express trains. I wonder how much time does the train save? if it were to shave a few hours off the time, and the fare would just be a reasonable rate, it might work.
one more question: do those special trains require a special track? or can they use the ones that are used by all trains?

I just saw a news report that said this train could get from NY to D.C. in 35 mins!
I believe they are making a big deal about this train because of the fact that it does use current tracks.....but it uses special rollers or something to that affect. The Maglev trains in China hit faster top speeds but they use a magnetic track.
