google doesnt have backup servers in a different location?
i have this addiction of checking my gmail every 30 seconds, and im not kidding... it's a problem that i have.. i also rely heavily on google to do work, it's almost impossible to be productive without it.
they have back up servers and in different geographic locations. i guess what happened is they either moved servers, or added new servers. DNS needed time to refresh so i was able to access the servers by IP and not by name.. that doesnt only depend on google but also depends on the DNS servers used by DNS controller... sorry if that's boring details.

That's what I figured but I imagined they would have gotten the backup DNS server online prior to changing them so that the site was never actually down.

i had it installed and i found myself checking that too... so i took it off hoping i wouldnt go on email at all...
it's funny... 2 years ago our IT guy came to me and showed me charts that i use 60% of internet traffic in the company, and they were all GMAIL!...

I just wait for the gmail notifier to notify me I have email... why would you check it also? But I also use gmail talk so my gmail browser tab is always open now
