I'd like this to stay as a serious topic as long as possible wihtout degrading into a sexual-related topic.
I work at a small company that pays at least the average. They're decent, i work with a good team, it's cooperative more than competitive, i know everyone almost at a personal level. The beauty of the job too is that i wear mutliple hats. so i do more than one thing. this means less organization but it also means more experience.
Some other big company is approaching me to work for them. It's the same programming job, with hopefully higher pay (i didnt get the offer yet, but i wouldnt even consider it if it wasnt significantly higher salaray-wise).
What do you guys think? what are the pros and cons attached to working with either a small or a big company? how can i know beforehand that i will be, or will not be happy there? what should be the factors that i need to consider?
Does the bigger co. have more opportunity to move up in the chain of command? Is there more potential there? You might not have as much room to grow in a smaller co. as you do in a larger co.

well in IT consulting world if you join a big company as a developer you will be a developer for a LONG time, but you probably have more space to move up higher on the technical ladder and become and architect in a smaller company.
Your concern is definitely valid though it lots of cases.
the verdict issues that i see in going to a bigger company are:
1. higher pay, at least for now (less bonus probably)
2. deeper experience in one thing vs. broader knowledge in many things
3. politics crap vs. cooperative environment
4. lots of travel (commute from OC to LA + out of state traveling) vs. 20% travel and office based in OC
5. big company looks better on resume especially that their clients are much bigger and known. like theres a difference between saying you worked for Toshiba, or Amjen vs. saying I worked for Jo Shmo (sp!)
6. possibly more working hours vs. 40 a week
7. not getting to drive the G as much (by that i mean not being able to live my regular life of going to gym, seeing friends, going to kung fu classes, seeing family...etc.) vs. living the life that i have now
im confused... i dont wanna pass an opportunity, but i dont wanna screw up my life either
How much loyalty do you feel toward your current employer and do you feel like your job is secure?
A big reason I have stayed with the school district is that I have beaucoup job security, which is not something that can be said for a corporate IT position.

no.3 n 7. are the biggest deals for me in the short-term.
but no. 1 by human nature will outweigh those too! Least for most ppl_

I can't answer for working in a big company but I work at a small one now (5 people) and i've been feeling like I need to get out. Alot of the things you mentioned are things I am dealing with now. Although having multiple hats is nice, if they aren't hats that you'd want to do in the future, then they may not help you all that much. Plus, if it's really small, there aren't any opportunities for advancement. Which may be fine for some people, but after many years at a job, it would be nice to have something to work towards (better title, more responsibilities, etc.).
There are definitely some great things about working at a small company but you have to also look at where you want to be in the next 5-10 years. If you're happy with where you're at now, then it may be good to stay. But you want a change, or want to grow, then it may be better to go to a larger company (provided they can offer that type of change or growth).
well eventually im going to get out of here, but i guess maybe im not ready, or i dont know if im ready... it's like i have not enough information to take the decision you know? i guess when i took my current job i didnt have much options so i took it and i was happy coz i didnt have anything to lose, but now im kind of scared to lose what i have now for something shittier haha
loyalty? well all i know is if business is going slow my ass is gonna get fired anyway. they wont keep me any minute longer than they want, so i really dont care about loyalty.
