I remember my friend laying his Triumph 650 down on the Westside Highway, a cop drove by him and did not even stop. New York city is a great place for a bike, but not to learn how to ride. Watch out for the cabbies, they love to pull up next to you at lights and steal your lane. NEVER, repeat NEVER ride a bike across the Manhattan Bridge. The grates are so wide and if you lay it down and get run over you will become grond human.
even if you get a bike, get some lessons first, and don't get a 600r as your fist bike, you will lay it down, there is no question about it.
Second thing, the code word for an injured motorcyclist in the emergancy ward is "organ donor"... because usually these are young men in perfect health that die from spinal injuries.
Not that you shouldn't get one, just learn how first. Crawl before you fly my friend.
Yeah I would recommend you take the motorcycle riding class. They usually offer them everywhere. I have taken one and they are great. It is basically like taking defensive driving but the subject is all about motorcycles and also you learn to ride the whole weekend. Once I turn 25 I will be purchasing my bike but I ride my parents Harley's all the time. Love bikes...goodluck with it Bizz and let us know how it goes. Oh and post pics of your new bike asap...

You should have bought a $2500 motorcycle to learn on for the first 6 months or so. Sad to say, but you will more than likely drop your bike (aka crash or let it fall over in the driveway) in the first 6 months. The things they teach you in that class will give you the foundation of riding techniques that will save your life. Also, buy a full set of leathers, spend at least $80 on the gloves and get a good helmet (Shoei or Arai). Think of the leathers as an insurance policy on your skin...is it worth it... I think so. Don't be one of those fools riding around in shorts and sandels with a tank top on.
I've been riding since 2000 and crashed after 4 months of riding. Luckily I had on all my protective gear and got out with only a broken collar bone. No road rash.
Get onto the track as soon as possible. You'll learn a lot about your skills and what you can actually do on your bike.
Here's some pix of me on my R6. These are taken in a closed course environment.
Sadly, I've know a few that have lost their lives, but it is such a great sport. Motorcycling and flying are my two main passions in my life and when my G-35 6MT gets delivered in the next month I'll have one more.
