Phones can be turned to "airplane" mode, where the recption is cut off and the phone is still powered on.
Pretty cool.. I've never heard of that till now

I got the PSP the day it came out and played it maybe 4-5 times.. They didn't have any games worth playing for a while.. I like the games on Nintendo DS a lot more..
I've had 3 or 4 phones that could act as MP3 players and one that had a FM radio built-in and I never used those features. Using MP3s as ringtones rocks, but for listening to music I'd rather stick to my iPod. It just has a much better interface for media, even on my 3125/smartflip/star trek I couldn't see playing back MP3s for actual listening.

My co-worker is thinking that the movie section of the market is going to belly up, so they might release a program to burn your own discs. Would be pretty cools to burn your movies over to the PSP and you can watch that stuff on plane rides or road trips.

you can copy movies onto the memory stick and watch movies that way....quality may not be as good from the compression, but it's on such a small screen that it would barely matter...

How large would the file be? Is there actually enough memory to watch a full movie or are you going to be popping in memory like a pack of gum?

You will need to upgrade the memory stick that came with the PSP, get either a 1 or 2 gb stick. You can fit the entire movie onto 1 stick. I'm not exactly sure of the file size of the movie, because I don't have a PSP, but this is what my friends do that have one.
OK, that'll work, but it'll only work for each stick you have. Burning a disc should eventually win out as the cheaper method unless the sticks go down to like $5 for a 2 gig stick.

Took it long enough.. I never understood why someone would spend more for a UMD than for a DVD, esp when portable DVD players aren't that expensive these days..
Thats Sony's problem though.. They keep trying to become innovators by introducing some new device, and force the consumer to buy some media that isn't widely used..
Blu-Ray looks like its losing all its support before the PS3 will even be released.. HD-DVDs are backward compatible (dual sided) and, I believe, a little cheaper..
I actually bought one of their Mini-Disc players in the late 90s.. I bought it since you could record a CD straight from the player.. Shortly after, CD-Rs got cheaper and burners were faster..
Luckily I was able to return the player.. Still have a pack of Mini-Discs somewhere in my room
Let's talk MP3 players here. I am looking for something not to exceed $200. I'm not necessarily huge into MP3 players, but if I have to listen to a baby crying for 5 hours on a plane, I will be killing someone. An AM/FM tuner would be preferred as well as a way to browse through some of the stuff in the library. It's been a while since I ripped one of my CDs to an MP3 format (once my old computer died, I have lost the will to do this..........takes too much time), so I'm looking for something that's quick and painless to transfer the music.
Your help is appreciated. I hate Apple BTW.
i bought a samsung one last night, and my girl says i should have gotten an ipod instead. 'looks like the samsung is going back. it's good, but i use itunes, so the interface with my computer would be a lot easier with an ipod too. i say that's probably the best way to go unless all of your mp3 files aren't through itunes. if they're not, i'd say go iriver. they make solid stuff, and their players have become much smaller eventhough they still have large capacity hard disks.
bueno suerte

the sticks are re-writeable, so you jus dl the movie onto your comp and just transfer whatever movie you want to watch onto the stick. But yea, memory stick are more costly than the other type of memory cards, but they are going down.
You sick bastard!!! My co-worker Mad Matt also suggested that. Then I started looking at games, expanded memory, movies, etc..... By the time I'm done I'm going to be sinking major $$$ into this.
I am staying away from the PSP route because then I'd have a PSP, XBox, PS2 and when the other stuff gets cheaper a 360 and PS3.

All kiddings aside, it really isn't as bad of an idea as you might think. It's the versatility. At $199 it is less costly than some of the MP3 players out there. Scout around for used ones like I did for even less. It's true the games will start adding up, but that is an option you don't have to enterain yourself with. I have yet dropped a single dime on the PSP games, because I'm having such a silly time playing all the classic SNES and Arcade games via emulation all for FREE. Simply filtering through litterally 2000+ (game) ROM files can be quite entertaining in itself.
The intention was to use this as a distraction during transients rather than a pure gaming machine; the PSP fit that bill very nicely. To be honestly, I find playing games on the plane fatiquing. More often than not I end up tapping into my MP3 library, close my eyes and tune to a nice track. It's a different story while waiting to be boarded, however. The games and gadgets were definitely necessary to keep me preoccupied.
Watching movies on the PSP is actually satisfying. Thanks to the brilliant LCD screen with plenty of real estate. It is far more effective than say the iPod. Movies are commonly compressed via DivX/MPG4, so they offer excellent space-to-quality ratio.
By the way, someone just ported mine sweeper (from windows) on this thing ... too cool.
