what's the worst neighborhood you've ever been in?
a previous thread made me think about this subject, so what's the worst neighborhood you've ever been in. doesn't have to be in the U.S. Could be Lebanon, Could be Bangkok - if you've actually been there.
Not heard about. Not seen on T.V. I'm talkin' where you wouldn't want to be there at night. Or when you drive through, you know you better keep the windows up.
I'll go first:
1. Downtown L.A. I've been going there since I was a kid because my dad used to drive a bus for 32 years before he retired. He put me through college that way. Well out of those 32 years, 25 of them he was based out of the hub out of Central and Alameda in downtown adjacent to Skid Row. Drug use is not only rampant, it's blatant. I would see fights all the time between homeless people. The bi-polar are always around talkin' to themselves and you just don't know what the hell to expect from them. I know tons of places to eat down there. I mean cool places. I used to go there to shop for toys at the wholesale places too!
But once the sun sets, foggetabout it. Don't go there unless you are looking for drugs, cheap missing tooth hookers, or to wither away and die and become forgotten. If you have a friend arriving at the downtown Greyhound bus station, don't take no fancy car, just do your thing, keep your windows up and drive away safely.
2. Oakland, CA. There are certain parts of Oakland that are just shaaady. That story about growing up around the tracks is no joke. That industrial/wherehouse area around the tracks in Oakland are places you definitely don't want to be at at night. I've been to Oakland many times, and overall, I don't think it's that bad. Just certain parts are REALLY bad. My sister-in-law is also an ER doctor at the county hospital in Oakland, and she's told me some shit that makes me go WTF?
3. Tijuana, MX. Stay around Revoluccion and you'll be fine. If you look American, you'll be fine. If you're dark skin like me and you wander off by the red light district area lookin' for tacos then you better be walkin' in a pack. Also, the drug trafficking trade has become so rampant around that place lately, with shootings, murders, and kidnappings . . . but I didn't know how bad it was until I went to a favorite seafood restaurant I used to go to a few months back.
They put up a sign that sad, "Los Armas no se Permiten." Meaning, guns are not allowed inside. Yeah, well we all walked out of there within a heartbeat. Guns are illegal in Mexico. Period. So for a restaurant to have a sign that says it . . . things can be pretty hairy in this town.
in nicaragua there's this place called el barrio chique.
i was with my cousin in his luxurious mercedes, and he told me to lock my doors. well this is pretty common practice for the upper class vehicles in latin america... but it turns out we entered this area in which there were a bunch of gangsters and drug dealers all over. there's this one guy that stood infront of us with a bat, and told us to slow down. my cousin slowed down a bit, honked at the guy, we realized we had people moving in on us from different sides, so he hit the gas and almost ran the guy with the bat over.
i dunno how we got there, i think he might've made a wrong turn somewhere... either that, or he just wanted to scare the shiiiizzzz outta me.

i agree about certain parts of oakland being bad...esp east oakland and west oakland...however, there are also multimillion dollar homes in certain parts of oakland. go figure.
i also have to add east palo alto...it was the murder capital of the country a few years ago.

Been to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd/Ave in Oakland for about 10 minutes. Wrong turn, we got the hell outta there.

It's interesting how a couple of streets (or a 1/4 mile) can make a difference. Take for example Pasadena. North of the 210 it is a cesspool full of drugs and crime. I remember a friend who had a house there (he thought the neighborhood would 'turn' and become more affluent) I spent New Year's eve there one time and right outside there were people shooting guns into the air. Meanwhile, just South of the 210 is one of the most affluent areas in the LA metro area. Multi-million dollar mansions.
Skid row is definitely bad as are South Central, certain areas of North Hollywood, East LA, etc.
I hear stories about my extended family's time in the Phillippines where in some areas people will cut off your finger to get your rings.
The So. side of Chicago is also a place I wouldn't linger.

Well I've been to some cities in countries, such as Sudan, Etheopia and Somalia, in Africa that kill people like people kill roaches. People shooting and killing each other for a cigarette and men gang raping young women in the open streets. Oh yeah, and bodies piled up like trash.
Rio in Brazil. A bunch friends and I visited Brazil a number of years ago. I had a girlfriend that was from Brazil and so I was out with her while my friends went out on the town. Well, I get back and find them all in the hotel room with sour faces. After some prodding I found out that they were robbed by a band of ganster kids. What's funny about this entire story is that all of my buddies are physically fit (all over 5'10") young dudes. At that time two were Navy Seals, two were Rangers and one was an ex Israeli special forces. So to say the least they knew how to defend themselves and how not to get into such predictaments. In either case, I heard that a bunch of young kids ran up on them in an alley near a club with AK47's and other assorted weapons. They happily handed over their valuables and went back to the hotel with damaged prides. Just in case you might not know, Brazil has some of the worst crime rates/murder rates in the world. Not to mention one of the highest AIDS rates too, but the place is an awsome place to party. Just make sure you have a local guide so you avoide all the "hot" spots.

ZZ, when I saw the movie City of God, it had a special features documentary about the slums of Rio and it interviewed the police, chief of police, and reporters . . . I couldn't believe it. I still can't believe how bad it is out there. They have footage of some of the shootouts that take place daily in those barrios. It makes South L.A. look safe.
By the way, if you haven't seen the movie City of God, see it. It's one of the best and most complete films out there.
Scene it. It was ironic that while I was deployed to some African countries I was probably dealing with all the weapons that he had probably sold at one time or another.
Yep, Rio is no joke folks. That place is like the wild wild west infused with everyone on crack. People kill for literally nothing.
