To be quite honest, I've felt "unsafe" in a few cities/town in the US, but I've never felt it to the point I've felt in some foreign cities. In the US, you have the peace of mind that someone will come, but in some foreign cities, you "know" nobody will come to help and that is a chilling feeling. Ain't no cavalry coming kids.

i grew up in a rather ghetto neighborhood, so i never felt unsafe as I was growing up. But then i've been living in the burbs for the past 10yrs and now i feel unsafe in those same neighborhoods that i grew up in.....
I guess if you're use to it, it's really nothing. Now i'm older and strapped and feel like chicken shit compared to when i was younger and didnt give a F.......

i fully agree, back wheni was a kid, i used to frequent many dangerous neighborhoods & really didn't care less, wasn't worried about nothing... now as i'm older i'd rather stay in areas where i bring down the property value & pose the biggest threat!!
... but i know one area i really hate to be in... & that is Waianae, i really get a creepy fucking feeling anytime i go up there, like just an absence of hope... think i'll go there today just to give myself a good scare!!
I just came back a few weeks ago. Granted, there are a few good spots, but in general, this third world country is still third world. And it doesn't seem like its changed much since the last time I was there 13 years ago.
But over there, even though they had the worst neighborhoods, they felt fairly safe. I guess just a low standard of living compared to the US.
I've never been there, but south america hands down. My boss went to columbia and they said don't even walk the streets because guys stab you in the butt if you are a tourist and then take your wallet when you fall. If you had a watch on your right hand and were driving around with your left hand out the window they'd stab your left hand, then you'd grab it with your right hand and they'd take the watch.
I've been in really shitty areas of mexico cuz we drive down there to fish a lot. But the most scared I'd ever been was when I was driving home on the 110fwy in la and it was closed down. They diverted us to the surface street right in south central la, at two am. Sheeyet it was full of gangs and homeless and I'm driving home in my brand new 4runner I had at the time and it was when everyone was getting carjacked. I really wished I had my gun then, I drove thru there as fast as I could and then got back on the freeway but it was like a five mile drive thru hell.
Leon you are quite correct, my friends live in oakland and they have a multimillion dollar house, i just dont get it. I guess it's like the million dollar houses in the westside of la, right by the shittiest parts of town.
I'm glad I live in sterile O.C. now

ballymun in dublin, Ireland. I lived there until recently and it is the worst area that isnt some third world war torn country.
Where in the city is Ballymun? I just came from a trip to Ireland and there was never a point in Dubling that I felt unsafe. I was also struck by how safe Derry and Belfast are. In Derry, I stayed at a B&B right in the Bogside and in Belfast we walked both the Falls and the Shankill and never felt uncomfortable.
most of dublin is very nice, very safe and theyve clened it up alot in the past few years because of the amount of tourists. if you felt safe everywhere you probably havent been to many places around the city
Calhoun Street, Trenton NJ! Only place I ever saw a gas station with concertina wire and a secure fence around it. And yeah, Camden is pretty scary too!
