Well, it depends... most small frame pistols are also a smaller caliber. But these lack the stopping power you really want for self defense. You'll get a ton of good recommendations, but I would start by looking at the Glock Model 27 in the .40 cal. It might be a little thick for your liking, but worth a look. I've owned one for several years for concealed carry and have never had a problem (jams, malfunctions, etc).
The other way to go would be a double-action revolver like the Lady Smith by Smith & Wesson. It is a smaller frame designed for small hands.
The Lady Smith is junk in my opinion. I'd try a Sig 239 in 9mm (also available in .40 if you can handle it). Single stack mag which makes it easier on people with small hands.
I own one myself for concealed carry. Excellent weapon.

Ditto this comment - and would stick with the 9mm. Of course if it is not for sport and just self-protection around the house, you can't go wrong with a short barrel 12 guage with a pistol grip. Minimal aiming required and you won't shoot through 3 of your neighbor's walls.

Is there much of a kick?

Ggirl before giving suggestions, what do you intend on using the gun for? This will have a major impact on what you should look for. Also what's your budget?

Just in case. No budget.

You don't need not stinking gun. Just practice your pimp/bitch slap and become a grand master at it. Make it like a knee jerk reaction thing. You'll rule your town in no time. Plus it's more fun.
